Are there ways to improve our singing?

Hopefully, the answer is yes. If we are preparing our children for usefulness in divine things, experience with choral music in school can prove very instructive. Singing together as families while driving or while sitting at the table encourages singing. Singing along with wholesome Christian recordings is helpful. Getting together in fellow-believers homes to sing the hymns we love is uplifting and beneficial to assembly singing. Learning about music could hardly be harmful.

More important than the art in our singing, though, is the heart in our singing. Since singing is so entwined in our past (Psalm 40:3)," TARGET="_blank">Psalm 40:3), present (Mark 14:26;" TARGET="_blank">Mark 14:26; Ephesians 5:19;" TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16)," TARGET="_blank">Colossians 3:16), and future (Revelation 5:9)," TARGET="_blank">Revelation 5:9), it is difficult to believe - despite ample evidence -that a believer who puts his mind to it and his heart into it cannot sing. If we grasp that our songs express our praise of God, no believer would mumble along or not even mouth the words during the singing (heavenly conditions!). Our Lord deserves our best. Singing "with the spirit" (1 Corinthians 14:15)" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 14:15) means that the songs come from the deepest part of our being; they are heartfelt. Is it wrong to say that singing "with the spirit" will produce spirited singing? A Christian who enjoys his salvation and joyously sings hymns from the Believers Hymn Book while hoeing his beans or driving his car will start the assemblys singing in a manner that will draw the others to join in the singing. In a small assembly, singing may be difficult, but whatever their number, worshipful hearts will cultivate "a joyful noise unto the Lord" (Psalm 100:1)." TARGET="_blank">Psalm 100:1).

Those responsible for the public worship included some David "set over the service of song" and they "ministered . . . with singing" (1 Chronicles 6:31, 32)." TARGET="_blank">1 Chronicles 6:31, 32). Evangelical congregations are hiring those with a "song ministry" Will redeemed hearts not gladly volunteer for this service and "serve the Lord with gladness, come before his presence with singing" (Psalm 100:2)" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 100:2)?

Is fasting out of character for us because it was part of the legal system that God instituted?

During the second forty days on the mount, Moses states, "I did neither eat bread nor drink water, because of all your sins" (Deuteronomy 9:18)." TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 9:18). "I fell down before the Lord... because He said He would destroy you" (verse 25). Because the people sinned, he fasted and interceded. Thus we have the practice, but no command.

Israel defeated by Benjamin (Judges 20:26)," TARGET="_blank">Judges 20:26), Jehoshaphat meeting a vast army (2 Chronicles 20:3)" TARGET="_blank">2 Chronicles 20:3) and Esther facing death (Esther 4:15)" TARGET="_blank">Esther 4:15) all fasted. Even the unsaved of Nineveh, on hearing Jonah preach, "believe God, and proclaimed a fast" (Jonah 3:5)." TARGET="_blank">Jonah 3:5). The practice was not limited to the law nor to Israel.

Unless "afflict your souls" (Numbers 29:7," TARGET="_blank">Numbers 29:7, with Psalm 35:13" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 35:13 where "chastened [with fasting]" is the same word as "afflict") commands fasting, no such command seems to be recorded. These passages link fasting with repentance and humility.

To what does the name "EL" in the names of God refer to?

Does the title "El" apply only to any singular Person of the Trinity, or does it apply to the Trinity as being One in nature and essence?

It seems that Mr. Newberry’s note is correct and instructive as far as it goes. Though El is a singular form (but not of Elohim, which is Eloah), I do not think it necessarily expresses a single Person of the Holy Trinity, though this is true in some cases (e.g. Immanu—El, with us— God). It means a “mighty one,” or simply “might,” and even any deity; but is used often too of the true God. The special emphasis of the word is the Divine Unity, whereas that of Elohim is plurality in Unity.

It is hardly ever used in prose writings without some adjunct or attribute, as Mr. Newberry’s references show.

Almighty God - ElShaddai;

the Everlasting God,—El-’Olam;

a jealous God, El-qanna’, and so on.

El-Elohe-Israel, is a special name of God—”God the God of Israel.”

The word is however much more frequent in poetical books such as the Psalms and Job—and sometimes with the definite article— “The God”; see Psalm 18:32" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 18:32—”The God girdeth me with strength”; Psalm 68:21" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 68:21—”The God shall wound the head of His enemies”; Job 8:3" TARGET="_blank">Job 8:3— “Doth the God pervert judgment?”—where the thought represented seems to be the True God. There are gods and gods, gods many and lords many, but our God is THE GOD—the only God. Perhaps the true key to the use of the word is that it may mean simply “a god”. The adjunct or attribute shows that the One True God is meant.

The context of discerning "the signs of the times" (Matthew 6:3)" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 6:3) is Jewish, referring to prophecies of the Messiah. Some prophecies were fulfilled by His incarnation and ministry Others will be fulfilled at His coming to establish His millennial reign. "Signs" and "times ' relate to God's prophetic program for Israel. The church and its hope are not governed by these, although, while awaiting our Deliverer from that coming wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10)," TARGET="_blank">1 Thessalonians 1:10), we are cognizant of God's preparation for the fulfillment of these prophecies. Rather than causing us to set dates, our awareness of prophecy helps us to live and teach in keeping with the spiritual needs of the declining hour. Knowing God's coming judgments on the world system confirms our need to separate from it. Daily looking for our Deliverer will increase sacrificial loyalty to His Name.

Four laws are in the passage.

   1. "The law of God" is spiritual, holy, just, good (verses 12,14), While the law cannot justify (3:20), in chapter 7 Paul demonstrates that the law cannot sanctify.
   2. "The law of my mind" (verse 23) consents that the law of God is good (verses 16, 18).
   3. "The law of sin" is a principle which opposes the expression of God's law in the life (verses 17-20), even though the inward man delights in it (verse 22), and the mind of the individual willingly desires to comply with it. Frustration and failure confront him at every turn. Thus hedged in, he finds himself taken "into captivity" as a prisoner of war by this sin principle in his members. The problem lies within self: "but I am carnal, sold under sin" (verse 14). Carnal self cannot be controlled by even a spiritual law. Deliverance is found alone through the resources of the risen, glorified Jesus Christ our Lord (verse 25).
   4. "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death" (8:2).

If the rumors are just passing stories that no one would take seriously, let them drift into nothingness. More harm than good might come from telling the person what others said. For example, if the person insisted on knowing who repeated the rumor, he would either be upset with you if you refused to tell him or upset with the person who told the rumor. You have become a talebearer who stirs up strife (Proverbs 26:20)." TARGET="_blank">Proverbs 26:20).

We should always ask for evidence to substantiate rumors about others, especially for persistent, harmful rumors. If supporting evidence is not available, make your disapproval clear. And never repeat damaging rumors (Titus 3:2;" TARGET="_blank">Titus 3:2; James 4:11)." TARGET="_blank">James 4:11). Wrongly damaging the reputation of others is serious (Proverbs 6:16-19)." TARGET="_blank">Proverbs 6:16-19).

Discussing the rumors in a friendly manner with the accused, without assuming the truthfulness of the rumors, would be a kindness, especially when accompanied by a sincere expression of concern that anyone would say such a thing. That would make it easier for the individual to admit that the rumor is true or partly true or else to affirm that it is totally false. Depending on its seriousness, you could even mention the supporting evidence you had been given. Every attempt should be made to contain the problem (Matthew 18:15)." TARGET="_blank">Matthew 18:15). If the rumor arose from a clear case of misunderstanding, don't give the wronged person a case against the source of the rumor, but volunteer to try to correct the misunderstanding yourself.

If the rumor appears likely to be true and involves issues of concern to the assembly, a believer is responsible to go to an overseer and kindly, humbly, confidentially, carefully inform him. If the believer did not inform the assembly's leadership, he would be responsible for wrongfully covering the sin (Acts 5:2, 8-10)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 5:2, 8-10). It is a mistaken kindness to support a believer in sinning against God.

When the overseers become aware of a possible problem, they are responsible to thoroughly investigate (Proverbs 25:2)," TARGET="_blank">Proverbs 25:2), visit the individual, and guide the assembly to act in keeping with the facts. The believer who passed on the information to the overseers has no further responsibility and must submit to their judgment (Hebrews 13:17)." TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 13:17).

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works" (2 Timothy 3:16-17)." TARGET="_blank">2 Timothy 3:16-17). This text should be the evaluator of all our Bible Readings. Each believer in assembly fellowship is committed to the profit of the assembly. May I suggest three things to help the character of our Bible Readings:

   1. For all: pray daily for brethren responsible to teach the Word; also, become acquainted revealed in the with the passage to be considered.
   2. For those responsible: learn the context of the passage by repetitive reading and prayer. Teaching the meaning and sense is true edification and, when applied to the need, will produce scriptural, intelligent action.
   3. For overseers: distribute the responsibility of opening the discussion. This encourages responsibility and development. It also enables responsible brethren to discern potential ability (2 Timothy 2:2)." TARGET="_blank">2 Timothy 2:2). This avoids a stagnation of exercise fostered by one man's monopoly.

Bible Readings are a pasture for the flock. Shepherds who learn to feed as did the Chief Shepherd will edify a happy, healthy flock being led in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

The Spirits work convicts of sin (John 16:8)." TARGET="_blank">John 16:8). The disciples preached that men should repent (Mark 6:12)" TARGET="_blank">Mark 6:12) while the Lord was on earth. Before His ascension, He sent them to preach repentance and remission of sins (Luke 24:47)." TARGET="_blank">Luke 24:47). Paul preached "repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ" (Acts 20:21)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 20:21). To the Jews in Jerusalem, Peter highlighted their crucifying the Messiah (Acts 2:36)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 2:36). To the Jews in Asia, Paul emphasized their historic disobedience to God (13:17-29) and to the Gentile philosophers their sin of idolatry (17:22-30). The Lord faced the Samaritan woman with her perceived need and with her sins (John 4:13-16)," TARGET="_blank">John 4:13-16), as He also did with the rich ruler (Luke 18:18-22)." TARGET="_blank">Luke 18:18-22). The Lord focused on Nicodemus sin, his spiritual ruin (John 3:3)." TARGET="_blank">John 3:3). The Spirit does not reveal truth about Christ while a soul resists the truths of guiltiness (because of sins) or ruin (because of sin).

Popular evangelical preachers are increasing their insistence that the gospel should make seekers comfortable and address only the hearers perceived need. In general, societys thinking justifies sin and obscures the divine line between right and wrong. These conditions demand a greater, rather than decreased, emphasis on mans sinfulness. Unbelievers, even while struggling to be saved, have not yet repented or submitted to God. Clearly presenting the sacrifice of Christ and the simplicity of salvation will not deliver an unrepentant sinner. The preaching of the gospel balances these valuable truths regarding Gods remedy with the convicting presentation of mans ruin.

This is an important and necessary question regarding the mystery view. Old Testament prophecy and New Testament prophecy centers around Israel. Both refer to specific events, times, seasons, persons, and places. New Testament statements fulfilled in this age or in our lifetime are of a different kind. For example, Second Timothy three describes "last time conditions." These are moral features that will characterize evil throughout this present period, up to the Rapture. That is likewise the character of what the Lord unfolds in Revelation 2" TARGET="_blank">Revelation 2 and 3. It may therefore be preferable to refer to this as the mystery view rather than the "prophetic view."

Distinguishing these two types of forecasts is crucial. We have no authority to state that present events fulfil the specific prophecies that center around Israel. After the Rapture, God will raise up prophets (Joel 2:28)" TARGET="_blank">Joel 2:28) whose ministry will be to identify, for example, events or persons saying, "this is that" (fulfilling specific Scriptures), as Peter did at Pentecost (Acts 2:16)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 2:16). The gift of prophecy is not functioning today. Those who attempt to exercise it have brought the subject of Bible prophecy into public shame.
