Does God grant the believer the desires of his heart?

"Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart" (Psalm 37:4)" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 37:4) promises this. The promise, though, has a condition, "Delight thyself also in the Lord."

Faith is the result of the work of God in our souls. After all, why is faith being tried (James 1:3)" TARGET="_blank">James 1:3)? God is strengthening our faith. Therefore, when we ask for the desires of our heart, if that request results from what we have learned about God through His Word and through the trials He allows for our learning, He grants it. If our requests come from our own desires for comfort, self-fulfillment, pride, or whatever, they are not of God, not of faith, and not promised an answer.

Sometimes our God waits for us to rearrange our priorities. For example, a man might view marriage as a way to help him avoid inconveniences and overcome weaknesses. Through experience with God, he learns that the eternal value of a wife is to enable him to fulfill God's will, to learn more of God's ways, and to become more like Christ. When that adjustment of priorities takes place, he is actually looking for a different woman than he was at first. Now he is thinking in keeping with God's will. Now the desire of his heart is God's desire.

Why was it a sin for David to count the people but not for Moses?

Why in 2 Samuel 24" TARGET="_blank">2 Samuel 24 was it counted a sin in David to number the children of Israel, whereas Moses was commanded by God to do so? (Exodus 30:12)." TARGET="_blank">Exodus 30:12).

Perhaps the very point our questioner notes as to Moses having been commanded to take the census of the people goes some way toward solving this difficulty. A thing may be commanded at one time, and not at another. For instance, the Feast of Tabernacles was commanded to be observed on the I 5th day of the seventh month, but to keep the feast in the 8th month, as Jeroboam did “out of his own heart,” was a flagrant offence (1 Kings 12:32)." TARGET="_blank">1 Kings 12:32). So, spurious imitations of God’s ordinances to-day become positive acts of disobedience; for instance, baptising infants, or making of the breaking of bread an idolatrous act, the “eucharist” or the mass. Moses was commanded in Exodus 17:6" TARGET="_blank">Exodus 17:6 to smite the rock, but when he did this in Numbers 20:11-12," TARGET="_blank">Numbers 20:11-12, it was counted a sin unto him. In Exodus 30." TARGET="_blank">Exodus 30. 12 the Lord gives a direction to be followed when an occasion arose for numbering the people—each one was to give a half shekel as a ransom for his soul unto the Lord. It was, so to speak, a recognition before the Lord that the life numbered was in reality forfeited and needed to be ransomed. There is no mention of this being observed in David’s case, though that was a command to the people in general. In Numbers 1:2, 3," TARGET="_blank">Numbers 1:2, 3, Jehovah commanded Moses to take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel—”From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel.” It was clearly a matter of order and importance that the number of the people should be known at the commencement of their desert journeyings, and it is given as 603,550. Then again in chap. 26, Moses and Eleazar were commanded to number the people at the close of their wanderings. They actually shewed a decrease of nearly 2,000, surely an eloquent commentary on the effect of their disobedience. Had they taken possession of the land when this was proposed to them they would, no doubt, have shown a large increase over a like period. In the case of David’s census, we read that “the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel and He moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah” (2 Samuel 24:1)," TARGET="_blank">2 Samuel 24:1), of which census a man of the world like Joab, and also the captains of the host, saw the futility. Joab’s words are remarkable; he expresses the desire that God might add a hundred-fold to the people, that the king might see the increase, i.e. without any need of a census. In 1 Chronicles 21:1" TARGET="_blank">1 Chronicles 21:1 we read, “Satan stood up against Israel,” which simply means that Jehovah in inflicting judgment on His people for their transgression, allowed Satan to move in the matter as His agent. Men may make difficulties and cavil at God’s ways, but He is Sovereign and He will be justified by all, when His ways and the secrets of men are known. In reality there was no command to David from Jehovah to number the people. It was an arbitrary act of self-will and self-glorying, resulting in the infliction of the plague on the very ones on whom God would inflict judgment. We see, then, in the “Samuel” account God in government carrying out His judgment on David and the people—He is the ultimate cause; but in the “Chronicles,” Satan is presented as the instrumental cause—He tempts David to engage in the path of self-will, and the King allows himself to be led astray and is responsible, as he admits himself (2 Samuel 24:17)." TARGET="_blank">2 Samuel 24:17). David, however, knows the grace of God, as well as His government, and his prayer is: “Let me fall now into the hands of the Lord; for His mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hands of man” (v. 14); and so he is led to build an altar unto the Lord and offer burnt-offerings and peace- offerings, typical of the sacrifice of Christ.

Will there be night in the Millennium?

Isaiah 60" TARGET="_blank">Isaiah 60seems undoubtedly to refer to the millennial glory of the saved nation of Israel. Verse 12 could not apply to the Eternal state. The passage—vv. 19 and 20, does not say there will be no sun or moon, but they will not be needed in “the city of the Lord, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel,” that is, in the rebuilt Jerusalem, as we see her described by the prophet Ezekiel. The glory of that city will not be her historical associations, nor her unparalleled situation, but the fact that the Lord will be there (Ezekiel 48:35)." TARGET="_blank">Ezekiel 48:35). Indeed that will give her her new name, “Jehovah-Shammah.” (The Lord is there). Though no doubt the sun will continue to rise and set, and the moon to wax and wane over the millennial earth, the prophet says to Israel: “Thy sun shall no more go down,” that is, the Lord Jesus, reigning as their Messiah in their midst will not cease to lighten His city. He whose face shone as the sun on the Holy Mount, will never be eclipsed, and they will need no other light. As for Revelation 21: 23, 24, 25," TARGET="_blank">Revelation 21: 23, 24, 25, it does definitely say “there will be no night there.” I believe the whole chapter from verse 9 to the end is a description of “the New Jerusalem,” in connection with the New Earth, which will only supersede “the first earth” at the close of the millennium.

Mark, by inspiration, tells us that the Lord cried, "My God, My God, why didst Thou forsake Me?" (Newberry) at the ninth hour, when the darkness ended (15:33, 34). Mr. Newberry’s alteration indicates that the Lord was no longer forsaken during the remainder of His time on the cross. Coming at the close of the darkness, this question seems to imply that He was forsaken either during all the darkness or at some time during the darkness. Those three hours were a special time of God’s dealing with Him for our sins.

At least one other passage shows that His bearing our sins was not limited to those three hours. "Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree" (Galatians 3:13)." TARGET="_blank">Galatians 3:13). 1 Peter 2:24" TARGET="_blank">1 Peter 2:24 seems to support this view, since He bore "our sins in His own body on the tree."

In Deuteronomy 21:23," TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 21:23, from which Paul quotes in Galatians 3," TARGET="_blank">Galatians 3, a rebellious, incorrigible son was to be stoned. Along with anyone who died because of disobedience to the law, this son’s body was to then hang on a tree, "accursed of God." The message was, "This is the drastic price of disobedience to God’s law." This was the message to Israel when God’s submissive, impeccable Son hung on a tree. No wonder they esteemed "Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted" (Isaiah 53:4)" TARGET="_blank">Isaiah 53:4)! The price was drastic, but the disobedience was theirs and by extension ours (Romans 3:19)." TARGET="_blank">Romans 3:19). During the first three hours God graphically displayed to man what sin cost, as Christ hung in shame, accursed of God. During the next three hours, God veiled from man the full cost of sin, for none but Divine Persons could measure such agony.

With unshod feet, we conclude that our Lord was bearing sins from the moment He was nailed to the cross until the moment He dismissed His spirit.

Is there more to know about God than what the Bible says?

Will we ever know more of truth than the Bible reveals?

We must state clearly that in this life, no further truth will ever be known than what is revealed in Scripture.

However, we would have to say that additional truth will be unfolded while endless ages roll.

As to the present, the Bible indicates that God's total mind and will have already been revealed. 1 Corinthians 13:10" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 13:10 shows that "sign gifts" were only required until the canon of Scripture, "that which is perfect," was complete. Thus when John, the last writer of the New Testament, completed his part of the inspired writings, God had no further message to give to this world.

Regarding the coming world (Ephesians 2:7)," TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 2:7), the writer shows "that in the ages to come" fresh manifestations of our Lord Jesus Christ will ever be unfolded and never be exhausted. Another has well said, "When we arrive at our desired haven, we will never graduate from heaven's university."

What does "for as the days of a tree are the days of my people" mean?

What is the meaning of God’s message in Isaiah 65:22" TARGET="_blank">Isaiah 65:22?

"They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands" (Isa 65:22)." TARGET="_blank">Isa 65:22). This echoes from the beginning of Israel’s national history in their land. The sins of the idolatrous inhabitants of the land rose to such a level that God removed them and gave it to Israel (Genesis 15:7, 16)." TARGET="_blank">Genesis 15:7, 16). When they went into that land, they received cities they didn’t build, houses they didn’t fill, wells they didn’t dig, and vineyards and olive trees they didn’t plant (Deuteronomy 6:11)." TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 6:11). Because of God’s judgment, the previous tenants built and didn’t inhabit, and planted but didn’t eat the fruit. God warned His people that disobeying Him would bring a curse; they would build a house and not dwell in it and plant vineyards and not eat the grapes (28:30), because invaders would oppress and spoil them (v 29).

As the decades of their disobedience mounted, they suffered tastes of this from invading armies, as in the days of Judges. Eventually, the Babylonian army carried them away captive and they suffered the full weight of the curse; their houses and vineyards were left for their captors to enjoy. During their captivity, the Lord pointed to a future day when He would regather them, judge their enemies, and cause His people to dwell safely in their land (Ezekiel 25, 26)." TARGET="_blank">Ezekiel 25, 26). They would build houses, plant vineyards, and dwell there with confidence. That promise has not yet been fulfilled, but will be during the coming earthly reign of Christ. They would no longer be disobedient and never again suffer from invaders.

The passage in Isaiah 65" TARGET="_blank">Isaiah 65 includes this blessing, but extends it. The context deals with the longevity God’s obedient people will enjoy during those thousand years (Isa 65:20)." TARGET="_blank">Isa 65:20). Even if no enemy invaded their land in the past, death would eventually intervene and someone else would live in their house and eat from their vineyards. In that future kingdom, where believers have God’s law written on their hearts, even death will not dispossess them of houses and lands. Their days will be lengthened to the age of trees, which generally outlive animal life. Horticulturalists indicate that some of the olive trees presently standing in Jerusalem’s Garden of Gethsamane were there when the Lord agonized in the garden’s dust.

The result would be prolonged enjoyment of their labors, for their days would be long on the land which the Lord gave them (Exodus 20:12)." TARGET="_blank">Exodus 20:12). The verse then assures their security (no dispossession), longevity (no death), and felicity (no departure).

Whether a husband or wife, a parent, a Sunday School teacher, a preacher or elder, or a brother or sister in Christ, none of us has the ability to bring greater spiritual help to others than what we practice ourselves (1Ti 4:12, 16)." Most certainly. In Revelation 5:6" TARGET="_blank">Revelation 5:6 John was granted a vision of the Lord in ascension on the throne of God, and He was seen as a living Lamb, standing, and yet as having been slain, that is, as plainly bearing in His body the sacrificial marks, or in other words, the scars, of Calvary. Besides, how could we admit for a moment that the marks in His resurrection body to which He made appeal again and again to prove His identity, have been removed since? How, moreover, could such appeal be real, unless the marks were something more than temporary and indeed an essential part of His spiritual body? It would be like some one appealing to imitation scars, to prove identity with someone who had received real wounds. We should lose, too, antitypically in a very serious way were we to admit the possibility hinted at in the question. For then how explain the blood on the live bird let loose into the open field in the day of the leper’s cleansing? (Lev 14:7)." TARGET="_blank">Lev 14:7). Or what would there be in the Heavenly temple to correspond to the blood on the earthly mercy seat, if the One on the throne no longer bore the marks of Calvary? When the Lord arose He had the same body that was crucified and slain, but under new conditions, that is, it was now a spiritual body. Again in ascension He had the same body as before, but once more under new conditions, for it was a glorified body, but still bearing as its highest glory the scars of Calvary.
It is indeed the presence of the Lord on the throne, which gives it its character as a throne of grace, and how appropriate then that He should retain His scars of atonement!
