Does the word "singing" (1 Corinthians 14:15;" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 14:15; Ephesians 5:19)" TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 5:19) imply musical instruments?

The basis of this question is the derivation of the word, "psallo," used 5 times in the New Testament and translated "sing," "sing psalms," or "making melody." The noun translated "psalm" (psalmos) comes from this verb. W. E. Vine gives the meaning as "primarily ‘to twitch, twang,’ then, ‘to play a stringed instrument with the fingers,"’ and adds that it means "in the New Testament, ‘to sing a hymn, sing praise."’ Similarly, Vincent states, "The verb, however, is used in the New Testament of singing praise generally."

The derivation of a word adds color to the meaning but does not define the word. Ephesians 5:19" TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 5:19 uses both forms of the word in a way that clearly removes them from the thought of an accompanying instrument. The noun, "psalms," is linked with speech and not music, "speaking to yourselves in psalms. The verb, "sing," cannot involve instrumental music when Paul says, "making melody in your heart."

In Job 19:19," TARGET="_blank">Job 19:19, the word "inward" is the word translated "secret" in both verses in this question, "All my inward friends abhorred me." It suggests intimate, privy friends. Six of the 21 times it appears in the Old Testament, this word is "counsel."

"Without counsel purposes are disappointed" (Proverbs 15:22)," TARGET="_blank">Proverbs 15:22), indicates that "the secret of the Lord" involves His plans by which He will accomplish His purpose. These are His ways to which only those intimate with Him are privy. "He made known His ways unto Moses, His acts unto the children of Israel" (Psalms 103:7)." TARGET="_blank">Psalms 103:7). The people saw what God did, but Moses whom the Lord knew face to face (Deuteronomy 34:10)" TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 34:10) came to know God’s ways, His counsel. Was Melchizedek an appearance of Christ in the flesh?

What are we to gather from the scriptural reference to Melchizedek?

Was he a man of God of his time—a priest of the Most High, indeed, or was he actually the Son of God?

In dealing with this perennial question one wishes to recognize the views of some esteemed brethren who take a contrary view to that expressed here. They believe that this was a Theophany or appearance of the Second Person of the Godhead in a temporary human form (all such theophanies being necessarily Christophanies), and that Melchizedek was actually the Son of God. But is there nothing in the fact that he is said to have been made “like unto the Son of God”? You don’t say a man is like himself; he is himself, but he may closely resemble someone else. However, many such theophanies occur to us—the man who wrestled with Jacob at Jabbok, the man with sword in hand who appeared to Joshua, the angels who appeared to Gideon and Manoah, etc.

One thing characterises them all. At first the appearance seems only human—an ordinary man, but at the end the superhuman, nay the Divine, character of the appearance is manifested. Note this in each of the cases referred to above. This is entirely absent in the case before us. In no sense are we informed that Abraham recognised Melchizedekas Divine, but he did recognise him as a king and as a priest of the Most High God, who ministered to his bodily needs and was greater than himself, therefore able to bless him and worthy to receive tithes from him. Again, Christ might have appeared as a King, but surely not as King of a well-known place as Salem or Jerusalem. Whoever Melchizedek was, his office as priest only shews that God in calling Abraham for a certain object, had not for that left all the world in darkness, but still had notable witnesses, outside His purpose concerning His chosen people to be. Those who stand for the deity of Melchizedek rely much on the expressions used by the Spirit of him in Hebrews 7" TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 7: , and make rather “in and out” efforts to shew how each expression applies to Christ. I believe the whole effort is in vain, for these expressions if forced to apply to Christ must be interpreted either of Him in incarnation or of Him before incarnation, and this cannot be done.

As a matter of fact, I believe there is one point and only one which the Holy Ghost would emphasise by His silence in Genesis 14" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 14: concerning the parentage, genealogy, birth and death of Melchizedek, and that is the conventIonal continuity and endless character of His priesthood. The meaning is not that this man was actually without parents nor that he is alive somewhere to-day, but that by the fact that he appears suddenly on the page of Scripture and that no mention is made of his decease, he is thus qualified to be an apt figure of Him Who is Priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek and Whose Priesthood can never pass to another.

What is "the gift of God" in Ephesians 2:8" TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 2:8?

This has often been discussed. Philippians 1:29" TARGET="_blank">Philippians 1:29 states that it "was given" to the Philippians to believe on Christ. That is not the teaching of Ephesians 2:8," TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 2:8, however. The grammar doesn’t seem to support this. If the antecedent of "that" ("that not of yourselves") were faith (Greek: "pistis," feminine), it would be feminine. Faith is not the theme of the passage, so the context would not point to that, either.

The passage deals with grace, but saying that grace is not of ourselves is redundant. It is evidently of God and, by definition, undeserved.

The gracious provisions of salvation (verses 4-6) will be unfolded eternally (verse 7). Being saved, resulting from grace and received by faith, is not accomplished by works, but by God Himself. This is further supported by verse 10, because they were God’s workmanship. What grace made them - as a result of their being saved - had the imprint of God’s hand. He did the work.

Simply put, their being saved was the gift of God.

Is it possible for a person to get a fresh revelation from the Lord today?

We need fresh illumination of what has already been written. The Spirit of God illuminates a submissive believer through the completed Word of God (1Co. 2:13)." TARGET="_blank">1Co. 2:13). However, both the gift of prophecy and inspired revelations ended with the death of the apostle John (see above).

Joel’s prophecy (2:28-31) indicates that the prophetic gift will again function after the Rapture and before the Lord’s return to earth. Daniel 12:4" TARGET="_blank">Daniel 12:4 refers to this unsealing of knowledge as individuals search the Scriptures. These tribulation prophets, the same as all the New Testament prophets, will not reveal new truth as Old Testaments prophets did but will have authority to interpret and apply existing Scriptures to their present circumstances.

God has been fully revealed in His Son, the living Word, and in His Scriptures, the written Word. The two are inseparable.
