Four cases come to mind. If a believer expects himself to be perfect before being baptized, he will wait for the Rapture. At that point, it will be too late to obey the Scriptures. Willingness to unreservedly obey the God’s Word is a sufficient condition for baptism (Acts 2:41)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 2:41). If a believer carelessly persists in self-will, he is not giving evidence that he is a Christian. For that person, baptism is inappropriate. If, in the third case, a person is obviously unaware of New Testament teaching regarding some aspects of Christian behavior, then patience, support, and counsel are appropriate, but not baptism. If he gladly receives further teaching, baptize him. Fourth, if a person still struggles with an addiction, such as smoking, baptizing him seems inconsistent. Baptism declares that the believer has died with Christ and been raised with Him to walk in "newness of life" (Romans 6:4)." TARGET="_blank">Romans 6:4). This newness of life is not merely a life that has changed, but a life energized by a different kind of power; it is resurrection life. To suffer under the power of a visible, addictive sin denies the power professed in baptism. Apart from daily salvation from the power of sin, any believer could founder. However, to baptize a person who is smoking, for instance, publically states that smoking is acceptable Christian behavior. Some think being baptized will help break their habit. That’s seldom the case. Breaking the nicotine habit is admittedly difficult for some, especially when they have suffered other "more serious" addiction. Perhaps the real difficulty is in confronting the fact that this "lesser" addiction is as unacceptable and sinful as the "more serious" addiction is.

Who was Saint Patrick and what is St. Patrick's Day?

Maewyn Succat is the real name of the man who the Catholic Church eventually declared to be Saint Patrick. He was born in 387 A.D. in Kilpatrick, Scotland and died in 461 A.D. He is known for his Christian missionary work in Ireland where he preached for 30 years. It is said that over 135,000 people were converted due to his teaching and 300 churches established throughout the country.

He didn’t appear to be born to greatness. When he was 16 years old he was captured by Catholic invaders and became a slave in Ireland. During his time in slavery, he learned about the non-Christian culture and customs of Celtic Ireland. Later in life he returned and converted many of these Celts to the Catholic faith.

He felt called by God because of a vivid dream in which God said “Your ship is ready.” St. Patrick jumped a ship bound for Britian where he received another message from God in a dream. This time in his dream he received a letter which was the “voice of the Irish”. Inside the letter he heard the people of Ireland asking him to return to teach them the Catholic faith.

Saint Patrick then studied to become an ordained Catholic bishop. Later he returned to Ireland to begin his missionary work. His preaching was met with great success. Knowing the Celltic culture, he adapted symbols of Ireland to teach Christian doctrines, most notably the shamrock, a three-leaved clover, to represent the trinity. It is also said that Saint Patrick introduced alcohol to Ireland which still affects the culture of Ireland today.

Saint Patrick’s Day Observed

Saint Patrick died on March 17, 461. March 17 is a national holiday in Ireland to commemorate their greatest Catholic missionary of all time. With a significant Irish immigrant population, the United States celebrates the day, but not to the extent of making it a national holiday. People wear green, claim to be Irish for at least one day of the year, drink green beer and in Chicago, dye the Chicago River green.

While the Bible doesn’t mention a special class of people as saints (all believers are referred to as the saints - see note below), Maewyn Succat was an extraordinary man who dedicated his life to teaching the tenants of the Christian faith to another culture. The main known as Saint Patrick made Ireland into one of the most ardent supporters of the Catholic Church anywhere on the planet.

The Bible refers to all believers as saints. See the following list of saints mentioned in the Acts and the Epistles...

Is it part of your doctrine that Gospel Hall members do not attend other Christian churches?

I have a niece who is attending a Gospel Hall and she has been told she can not attend any other Christian church. She is going away to college and there is no Gospel Hall near her college but there is another Christian church nearby. Now she does not want to attend college as there is no Gospel Hall near her college.

Is it part of your doctrine that Gospel Hall members do not attend other Christian churches?

Thanks for writing. Your concerns may you lead to investigate a number of issues about the nature of the Church from the scriptures.

The fellowship of a believer with others is based on commonly-held doctrines. An assembly at a gospel hall usually is a conservative group that holds to the teaching of the inspiration of scripture, the virgin birth, salvation through faith in Christ apart from works, the regular practice of the breaking of bread, the desire to live a pure life.

Some doctrines that your niece may wish to uphold that are not universally accepted in churches:

- tongues and other gifts of the spirit given to the apostles ceased with the completion of the New Testament.
- a group of elders in the assembly lead in guiding the flock of believers instead of a single pastor.
- women show the submission of the church to the Lord by covering their heads with a hat or veil during the meetings. Women to not participate in teaching or leading the group in prayer (1 Timothy 2" TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 2:)
- a church/assembly takes the name of no denomination. The name Gospel Hall applies to the building, but not an organization or group of people (Matthew 18:20)" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 18:20)
- the fellowship of the church consists of believers who can identify a time when they received Christ, later were baptized and hold to the doctrines mentioned above. Those who are not saved or do not hold to such doctrines are received as visitors, but do not form part of the fellowship (Acts 2:42-43;" TARGET="_blank">Acts 2:42-43; 1 Corinthians 14:16, 23, 24)." There is no official list of doctrines or creeds among the assemblies. The scriptures are their guide. One assembly's decisions and views may differ from another.

Your niece probably feels uncomfortable joining a church that may not follow some of these practices.

How can I gracefully refuse an invitation to a church that I know is practicing wrong teachings?

Without being offensive, how can I handle the invitations of those whom I have brought to gospel meetings when they ask me to their "services?"

Because there can be no fellowship between the things of God and the things of this world (2 Corinthians 6:14-16)," TARGET="_blank">2 Corinthians 6:14-16), Paul teaches, "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate" (verse 17). Returning to an unbeliever's congregation disobeys this instruction.

No explanation is likely to be understood. Pointing out unscriptural features of that congregation will likely offend this friend. Instead, anticipate a reciprocal invitation. Pray for grace to answer in a kind, humble way. Express a sincere appreciation and understanding of his invitation. Make certain he understands that you value his friendship and company in contexts which don't compromise your convictions. Be open to discussion, but direct the conversation toward the primary issue between you, the necessity for God's salvation. Let him know that spiritual rather than social concerns motivated your invitation.

Reception to and removal from an assembly are not merely earthly decisions; they are administrative actions. The assembly administers on earth the will of God in heaven. The Lord teaches this in Matthew 18:18," TARGET="_blank">Matthew 18:18, "Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." The assembly administers a case by either applying heaven's discipline or releasing from it. The assembly thus acts in its character as the "House of God" (1 Timothy 3:15;" TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 3:15; Genesis 28:17)." TARGET="_blank">Genesis 28:17). When the assembly carries out the Word of God, His will in heaven and the assembly's action on earth are the same.

God views the assembly as a unit when it prays (Acts 4:24)," TARGET="_blank">Acts 4:24), responds (11:22), worships (1 Corinthians 10:17)," TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 10:17), and acts (Matthew 18:17)." Therefore, administering for God, the assembly receives and the assembly puts away. Seen by God as a unit, "the whole assembly receives and the whole assembly puts away."

What does the Bible teach about the present condition awareness, and occupation of believers who have died?

Although the Bible does not take up this subject in detail, we can draw a number of conclusions:

   1. Believers in heaven are very happy (Revelation 14:13)." TARGET="_blank">Revelation 14:13).
   2. They are with Christ, beholding the One who loved them and gave Himself for them; they are far better off in such a wonderful place (Philippians 1:21, 23)." TARGET="_blank">Philippians 1:21, 23). They no longer have the flesh and the trial of suffering that so troubled them on earth (Romans 7:24," TARGET="_blank">Romans 7:24, 25a).
   3. They rest from their labors until the Rapture when they receive glorified bodies in which they will commence their eternal service for God (Revelation 14:13; 22:3, 4)." TARGET="_blank">Revelation 14:13; 22:3, 4).
   4. They recognize others and converse with one another (Luke 13:28;" TARGET="_blank">Luke 13:28; Matthew 17:4;" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 17:4; Luke 16:24)." TARGET="_blank">Luke 16:24).

Will the resurrection bodies of the saints be the same as those in which they lived and died?

In our Lord’s resurrection we have the pattern of our own. Was the Lord’s resurrection body the same as that in which He lived and died? Yes, it was the same body; there was nothing left in the tomb but the grave-clothes, and our Lord took pains to show that His body was truly the very one that had died, by calling attention to His hands and feet which bore the marks of His cruel death on Calvary.

But though the same, it was not under the same conditions.* It was a spiritual body, not subject to the same laws as before. It could disappear at will; it could pass through closed doors; it could be seen and not be recognised, and then suddenly become recognisable; but also it could be touched and felt; it could eat, it had flesh and bones, it was a real body. When the Lord ascended “God gave Him glory,” and His body was also glorified, as Paul saw Him on the way to Damascus. It was the same body, but under new conditions (see Luke 24:36-43;" TARGET="_blank">Luke 24:36-43; John 20:5, 7, 13, 19, 25, 27;" TARGET="_blank">John 20:5, 7, 13, 19, 25, 27; Philippians 3:20-21)." TARGET="_blank">Philippians 3:20-21). Really the buried body is the sown grain, and the glorified body the flower, the same, yet not the same. God gives to the grain a body as He pleases. But what goes to form the flower, was once in the grain. A gardener can recognise the flower from the seed, and vice-versa. And so every saint will have a glorified body that will be recognisable, as coming from its particular seed sown in the graveyard. There will be no confusion: “to every seed his own body,” and all “like Him” (1 Corinthians 15:37, 38, 44, 49)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 15:37, 38, 44, 49).

How distinct are the Persons of the Trinity - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

Are there three distinct Persons in the Godhead, to be distinguished from one another?

It is wise to be humble as we approach the high and holy subject of the Being of God. Any mere discussion of Him, before whom the angels veil their faces, the Three in One and the One in Three, should be guided by Him. We must not try to define or explain or measure where the Word of God is silent; in fact our wisdom is to limit ourselves as far as possible to the words of Scripture. We "cannot by searching find out God" (Job 11:7)," TARGET="_blank">Job 11:7), except in so far as He is pleased to reveal Himself.

God has never condescended to prove His existence, nor yet explain His mode of Being; but He reveals Himself in His Works and Word; and even then we need God the Spirit to teach us. The great truth of the Old Testament is the Unity of the Godhead. “The Lord our God is one Lord” (Deuteronomy 6:4)," TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 6:4), and we believe this as strongly as any Jew or so-called Unitarian. But from the very first verse of Genesis we are made aware of a Plurality in that Unity. The word for “created” is in the singular, but “God” is a plural word— Elohim, though when this stands for strong ones or false gods, it takes a plural verb (e.g., see Exodus 32:4)." TARGET="_blank">Exodus 32:4). In verse 2 a Personal Being in the Godhead is differentiated: “the Spirit of God.” Then in verse 26 we read, “Let us make man in our image.” Later, in Exodus we become aware of another Person—the Angel of the Lord, to whom Divine honours are paid (chap. 23.20-22)—and yet He is distinct from Jehovah. In Matthew 3:1" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 3:1 the word “messenger” (“messenger of the covenant”) is in the Hebrew the same as “angel”. We are brought face to face with a Personal Wisdom possessed by Jehovah “before His works of old” (Proverbs 8: 22-31);" TARGET="_blank">Proverbs 8: 22-31); and in Proverbs 30:4" TARGET="_blank">Proverbs 30:4 we are asked, Who is the Creator and “what is His Son’s name?” Who then is this Angel of His presence— and Who this Spirit against whom Israel rebelled and Who was grieved with their ways? (see also Zechariah 12:10" TARGET="_blank">Zechariah 12:10 and Zechariah 13:7)." TARGET="_blank">Zechariah 13:7). Clearly even in the Old Testament there are in the Unity of the Godhead, three Personal Subsistencies.

In the New Testament this becomes clearer. In Matthew Jesus is identified with Immanuel—”God with us.” But “God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son” is equally true, so that the Giver and the Given One are both God. Again in John 1:1" TARGET="_blank">John 1:1 we read “The word was with (or in relation to—pros) God, and the Word was God” and in V. 14, “the Word became flesh.” To Him at His baptism the heavens were opened and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and heard a voice from heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son in whom I sin well pleased” (Matthew 3:16-17)." TARGET="_blank">Matthew 3:16-17). Later, He “by the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God” (Hebrews 9:14)" TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 9:14) and then after the Lord ascended, the Father sent the Spirit, in His and His own name, to testify of Christ.

All who believe are to be baptized into the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28.)," TARGET="_blank">Matthew 28.), and to such comes the message, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13:14)." TARGET="_blank">2 Corinthians 13:14). “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father” (Ephesians 2:18)." TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 2:18). We do not confound the Persons nor do we divide the Substance. There is a distinction in the Divine Functions. The Father preordains—determines “the times and seasons,” and gives the Son; The Son creates, redeems, intercedes; The Spirit calls, gives life, indwells. But those three Divine Persons are coequal, coeternal, co-substantial in the Unity of the Godhead.
