Should a Christian celebrate the Passover?

The Jewish holiday of Passover commemorates the Exodus of the children of Israel from their slavery in Egypt. Moses commanded the people to choose a lamb, prepare it with bitter herbs and apply the blood to the doorposts and lintel of the doors of their houses. Those Egyptians who chose not to participate in this ceremony, lost their first born sons at midnight. Pharaoh then permitted the people of Israel to leave the country. Jewish homes still celebrate the Passover today with some changes to the original details of the meal as recorded in Exodus 11" TARGET="_blank">Exodus 11 and12.

The New Testament says that Christ is the fulfillment of the Passover event (1 Corinthians 5:7-8)" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 5:7-8) and that Christians should recognize the spiritual significance of the feast of Unleavened Bread, which immediately precedes the Passover.

There are some Christians who not only see the spiritual lessons of Christ’s salvation prefigured in the Passover, they also wish to celebrate the Passover in all of its details. They say that the Passover is a cultural event. Continuing the supper allows Jewish believers to retain their cultural heritage and at the same time embrace Christ as their savior. A second reason for a Christian to celebrate the Passover is to use the event as an evangelism tool to explain the gospel to Jewish friends.

A Christian may choose not to celebrate the Passover based on the teaching of the Epistle of Hebrews. The whole point of the Book of Hebrews is that Christ is the fulfillment of the law. All Old Testament rituals were mere shadows of the coming Promised Messiah. We should leave all old practices now that they have become obsolete. Hebrews 13:10-13" TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 13:10-13

10 We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle.

11For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp.

12Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

13Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.

14For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

The “Last Supper” of the Lord Jesus and his disciples was a commemoration of the Passover of Moses. It was the last time to be practiced before Christ introduced the New Covenant. (Matthew 26:28)." TARGET="_blank">Matthew 26:28). The epistles never command us to remember the Passover, but to break bread remembering the death of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:23-34)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 11:23-34).

If a believer chooses to celebrate the Passover, he should be fully aware that there is no sanction for it in the Bible. However, it would be wrong for another believer to condemn him for doing so. Colossians 2:16-17" TARGET="_blank">Colossians 2:16-17 and Romans 14:5" TARGET="_blank">Romans 14:5 say that believers are free to conduct celebrations of Sabbaths and other holidays.

The Bible affirms the Church, which is the Body of Christ, will not experience "the Great Tribulation" or "the Time of Jacob's Trouble." In this period of divine judgment, God will deal with the spiritual blindness and sins of Israel to restore her to Himself. Daniel 9:24-27" TARGET="_blank">Daniel 9:24-27 is an important passage describing Israel's history from the desolation of Jerusalem by Babylon (2 Chronicles 36:15-21)" TARGET="_blank">2 Chronicles 36:15-21) to their restoration and blessing under Christ as their King. Believers of this dispensation are not mentioned in this prophecy or any other relating to Israel's earthly hope or judgment. Our hope is heavenly for the wrath of God due us was on our wondrous Substitute at Calvary (Romans 8:1, 32-39)." TARGET="_blank">Romans 8:1, 32-39).

2 Thessalonians 2:3-12" TARGET="_blank">2 Thessalonians 2:3-12 states the Day of the Lord, which includes the outpouring of His wrath upon the nations (first 42 months) and Israel, begins at the appearing of "the Man of Sin." There must be a "taking out of the way" first. Till the Rapture, the work of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the Church restrains the manifestation of this "Wicked One" and therefore God's wrath.

The Church, having been raptured, will not be God's witness on earth during that period. 144,000 Jews are raised up preaching a message for the hope of Israel, not the hope of the Church.

In Christ, we are "children of light" and not "of darkness," saved from the coming wrath appointed for the world (1 Thessalonians 1:10; 5:2-9)." TARGET="_blank">1 Thessalonians 1:10; 5:2-9).

Revelation 3:1" TARGET="_blank">Revelation 3:1 0 promises, "I will keep thee from the hour of temptation which shall come upon the whole world." Ours is a "blessed hope," "a comfort," an imminent event, "For our citizenship (Young's Literal) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior (Deliverer), the Lord Jesus Christ" (Philippians 3:20)." Who partakes at the Lord’s supper?

Those who "break bread" together express a unique oneness: "For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread" (1 Corinthians 10:17)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 10:17). When the apostle deals with gifts (12:1), he shows that their functioning must be regulated by the truth that "ye are [the] body of Christ" (12:27). They expressed in breaking bread that they were like a body (10:17), which takes its character from the one Body of which all believers form a part (Ephesians 4:4;" TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 4:4;1 Corinthians 12:12, 13)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 12:12, 13). Obviously, for those who break bread together to function as a unified body, they must be part of the assembly. Partaking at the Lord’s Supper is not the right of individuals, but the responsibility of a church of God.

Morally, our fallen nature is completely corrupt and degraded. "Deceitful above all things, and incurable" (Jeremiah 17:9," TARGET="_blank">Jeremiah 17:9, JND), our natural heart, our mind, is hostile to God and rebellious against and incapable of submission to righteousness (Romans 8:7, 8)." TARGET="_blank">Romans 8:7, 8). Apart from Gods intervention, we neither seek Him nor desire anything but what serves self. This evil contaminates all that human nature produces; therefore, the unregenerate cannot glorify or please God.

Going beyond Scripture, Calvinists, however, teach that "total depravity" means mans will cannot choose right. That God brings judgment on those who disobey the Son (John 3:36," TARGET="_blank">John 3:36, Weymouth) and assures the water of life dependent on mans will (Rev. 22:17)" TARGET="_blank">Rev. 22:17) affirms mans ability to choose evil or good. Adams fall bent the will of "the sons of disobedience" (Ephesians 2:3)" TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 2:3) toward evil, but did not make them incapable of choosing right. Furthermore, mans conscience bears the signature of Gods law (Romans 2:13)." TARGET="_blank">Romans 2:13). Depravity is total in its effect on all man does, but not its extent to every part of man.

What should I do at work, at school, or in the neighborhood when I am asked to buy a raffle ticket or a lottery ticket to fund a good cause such as an injured child or a family who is out of work?

A Christian can answer, "I want to cheerfully help any good cause, but I don't feel free before God to buy a raffle ticket or a lottery ticket. I will give you the price of the ticket for the good cause without getting the ticket."

We read in Galatians 6:10," TARGET="_blank">Galatians 6:10, "As we therefore have opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto those who are of the household of faith." Titus 3:1" TARGET="_blank">Titus 3:1 teaches that we are to be "to be ready to every good work." Doing good to others when we can, we will be a little like our Lord Jesus, "Who went about doing good" (Acts 10:38)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 10:38). One of the reasons why our Lord Jesus gave Himself for us is that we might be zealous of good works" (Titus 2:14)." TARGET="_blank">Titus 2:14).

Does Satan cause natural disasters?

Is Satan responsible for natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, mudslides or tornadoes?

Every time there is a major disaster such as the massive earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the earthquake in Japan in 2011, Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana in 2005, the earthquake and following tsunami in Indonesia and Thailand in 2004, we invariably ask the question – where is God? Is Satan responsible for causing natural disasters? Does God permit natural disasters?

Satan is not in control of the world. Anything he does has limits placed upon him by God. Being a powerful angel, although fallen from his original position, he has been given great power. But Satan is not infinite.

The clearest example of natural disaster being caused by the Devil is found in the book of Job. The first chapter of Job is quoted in the paragraphs below. God permitted Satan to attack Job but only to the extent that God allowed. Satan was not allowed to take Job’s life. However, Satan stripped Job of every posession and loved one. You will see in the following verses that the events were attributed to a group of raiding warrior (15 and 17), the “fire of God” (17) and wind from the wilderness (19). Job is never told from where his troubles were coming from. He is unaware the Satan is involved, but he recognizes that God is in control of it all. The rest of the book deals with his mental anguish at being tried by God.

Job 1:9-22" TARGET="_blank">Job 1:9-22 Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "Does Job fear God for no reason? (10) Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. (11) But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face." (12) And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand." So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. (13) Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, (14) and there came a messenger to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, (15) and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." (16) While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you." (17) While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." (18) While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, (19) and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you." (20) Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. (21) And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD." (22) In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.

So should we conclude that everyting bad in the world is a result of Satan's work?

Natural Explanations

It is clear from scientific study of the earth that there are natural explanations for every kind of natural disaster. Warm water in the oceans creates conditions suitable for massive windstorms. The shifting of the earth’s plates causes earthquakes where tectonic plates come together. Underwater earthquakes cause tsunamis. While we may know the immediate natural cause for disasters, we still credit the ultimate hand of providence to God. Insurance companies won’t cover property damage in times of war or because of “Acts of God”. Did God design the world to be full of suffering?

God is in control

Colossians 1:16-17" TARGET="_blank">Colossians 1:16-17 says that Jesus Christ is in control of the universe:

Colossians 1:15-17" TARGET="_blank">Colossians 1:15-17 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. (16) For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him. (17) And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

It was Very Good

The way in which God created the universe has been affected by sin. At the close of the week of creation we read that the creation was “very good”. Like a work of fine art, God was satisfied that what he created was beautiful and perfect.

Genesis 1:31" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 1:31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Shortly after finishing the creation, Adam and Eve sinned, bringing a curse onto the earth. Romans 5:12" TARGET="_blank">Romans 5:12 tells us that death came into the world through sin.

Romans 5:12" TARGET="_blank">Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned--

The curse extended to the earth. God caused the earth not to yield its full potential in growing food.

Genesis 3:17-19" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 3:17-19 And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; (18) thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. (19) By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Later in the Bible, the “whole creation groans” under the curse of sin. The world still suffers under the influence of the curse from the first sin. It can be concluded that the “groaning” of creation can be seen in the suffering that randomly visits us as well as the beings of the world.

Romans 8:18-22" TARGET="_blank">Romans 8:18-22 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (19) For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. (20) For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope (21) that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. (22) For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

Does God judge us through natural disasters?

There are some occasions in the Bible when God utilized nature to bring judgment directly against a group of people. However, like all miracles in the Bible, these events are exceptional occasions when God was lifting up a prophet (Moses, Elijah) or bringing an end to an era of wickedness. There is nothing in the Bible to indicate that we should try to interpret weather, earthquake, plague or any other naturally occurring disaster as a sign from heaven. The following examples are all accompanied by the message of a prophet sent by God. The prophet carried with him special authority to control these events, not merely explain them.

Elijah, a prophet of God, caused a terrible famine to strike the land of Israel for the sin of the king and the people.

1 Kings 17:1" TARGET="_blank">1 Kings 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word."

Through Moses, God caused terrible plagues to fall against Egypt. Most of the plagues have similar events that occur in nature, but God caused these plagues to fall at the command of Moses and at a much greater severity than anything in the history of Egypt.

Moses and all the people of Israel watched as Korah and his rebellious followers were swallowed in a disaster like an earthquake or a giant sink hole.

Numbers 16:29-33" TARGET="_blank">Numbers 16:29-33 If these men die as all men die, or if they are visited by the fate of all mankind, then the LORD has not sent me. (30) But if the LORD creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the LORD." (31) And as soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart. (32) And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the people who belonged to Korah and all their goods. (33) So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

In the judgments against the earth in Revelation 6" TARGET="_blank">Revelation 6 to 18 tell us about massive hailstones, earthquakes, comets falling from the heavens and water turning to blood.

Revelation 16:21" TARGET="_blank">Revelation 16:21 And great hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, fell from heaven on people; and they cursed God for the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe.

Revelation 8:8-11" TARGET="_blank">Revelation 8:8-11 The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. (9) A third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed. (10) The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. (11) The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter.

But why does God allow suffering to continue?

The explanation from the verses above answers the questions as to “where” does the suffering come from – from sin. However, the questions still remains “Why doesn’t God stop it?”

If a person believes in "falling away", can they really be saved?

How can a saved person believe in "falling away?"

This is possible only because of wrong teaching.

Those who propagate the "falling away" doctrine are wrong about many things. They believe one will lose his salvation when he sins. Wrong! This implies that the work of Christ is insufficient. They teach that to believe in eternal security means one can live a wicked, immoral life and still get to heaven. Wrong! "How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein" Romans 6:2" TARGET="_blank">Romans 6:2? Christ's death FOR us was also our death TO sin. A person who is saved abhors sin and has no desire to continue in it.

Few who hold this doctrine are saved because this basically means salvation is by works. Some among them recognized they were unable to merit salvation. God revealed to them salvation through the finished work of Christ. They believed and were saved. The wrong teachings they hear hinder them from appreciating the wonderful truth that salvation is eternal. Let us pray that God will reveal this to them also.

Would assembly-sponsored summer camps be helpful?

The New Testament provides us with all the teaching God intended for the functioning and service of the local assembly. One cannot find any teaching or references to assembly-sponsored summer camps in Scripture. The primary activity in summer camps has been recreational, rather than spiritual. A number of such camps do have campfire gospel messages for the young people every evening. The campfire environment tends to have an emotional impact on young people. Unfortunately many children and teenagers, who have vacationed at church-sponsored summer camps, have made campfire professions which have turned out to be false. Such professions have often hindered them from coming to Christ until they have given up their false professions and admitted they were lost. It would be much safer and more profitable to hold daily children's meetings or Gospel meetings for teenagers in a manner that would reach their hearts and consciences rather than their emotions. Summer camps are very common in the evangelical, denominational religious world. God warns His people both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament of the danger of copying the practices of the religious world around us. This has always resulted in a gradual drift from God's plan for His people and eventual discipline from the hand of God.

During early Christian days, instrumental music in assembly gatherings was likely impractical, if not impossible, due to a combination of poverty, mobility, simplicity, and persecution. Its absence is not only practical, but also consistent with New Testament teaching. In this age, worship is in heaven, in the holiest (Hebrews 10:19)," TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 10:19), and rises from redeemed spirits. A capella singing testifies to this truth. Every aspect of worship and service in the assembly has priestly character. "The sacrifice of praise," "the fruit of our lips" (Hebrews 13:15)," TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 13:15), must include songs of praise. New Testament singing is "to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19;" TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16)." TARGET="_blank">Colossians 3:16). Gospel hymns have a clear message for unbelievers, but they include notes of praise to God. Songs touch cords of deep emotion in the heart of a believer and thus draw the spiritual response of worship.

This indicates an added reason for not amplifying the emotional impact of gospel singing by the use of instruments. To make songs a primary thrust of reaching those who are spiritually dead is to build on an emotional response, rather than reaching the mind and conscience with the gospel. This directs the Seed of the Word to stony ground that receives the Word "with joy," an emotional response (Luke 8:13)," TARGET="_blank">Luke 8:13), but is not fruitful. The Lord indicates that fruitful hearts are those who understand the truth (Matthew 13:23)." TARGET="_blank">Matthew 13:23). Singing is only a supplement to preaching, the primary thrust of evangelism.

Therefore, there is scriptural reason in every assembly gathering to maintain the public testimony that worship is spiritual in character.
