What are the different names of God and what do they mean? Is Jehovah the only true name of God?

"God" may be the first name that comes to mind when thinking about God, but his names throughout the Hebrew Old Testament teach us much more about his character than one name can contain. Here is a list of many well known names of God and what they mean.

El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty) “The Mighty One of Jacob” (Genesis 49:24;" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 49:24; Psalm 132:2,5)." TARGET="_blank">Psalm 132:2,5).

El Gibhor (Mighty God) (Isaiah 9:6)" TARGET="_blank">Isaiah 9:6) – the name of Christ Jesus in the famous prophecy of the child to be born.

El Elyon (The Most High God) Deuteronomy 26:19" TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 26:19 – the highest point to which anyone can be exaulted.

Adonai (Lord, Master) Genesis 15:2;" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 15:2; Judges 6:15." TARGET="_blank">Judges 6:15. Usually translated as Lord with only the first letter capitalized.

Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah) YHWH Deuteronomy 6:4;" TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 6:4; Daniel 9:14" TARGET="_blank">Daniel 9:14 – Usually translated as LORD with all capital letters. “I Am who I Am” (Exodus 3:14)." TARGET="_blank">Exodus 3:14).

Jehovah Nissi (The Lord My Banner) "The Lord Our Banner" (Exodus 17:15)" TARGET="_blank">Exodus 17:15) as in the colors under which the army marches.

Jehovah-Raah (The Lord My Shepherd or Jehovah-Rohi: " Psalm 23:1)" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 23:1)– David's most famous Psalm gives us the title of the ever-present Lord in our lives.

Jehovah Rapha (The Lord That Heals) Exodus 15:26" TARGET="_blank">Exodus 15:26 – “I am Jehovah who heals you". God promised supernatural protection against the diseases that fell upon the Egyptians. God was called Jehovah Rapha after the bitter waters of Marah were cleaned by the tree thrown into the water.

Jehovah Shammah (The Lord Is There) Ezekiel 48:35" TARGET="_blank">Ezekiel 48:35 – Jerusalem was once the dwelling of the holy presence of God. God abandoned the place for a while, but returned in Ezekiel 44:1-4." TARGET="_blank">Ezekiel 44:1-4.

Jehovah Tsidkenu (The Lord Our Righteousness) Jeremiah 33:16" TARGET="_blank">Jeremiah 33:16 – God is the giver of righteousness to sinful man. Salvation through Christ is provided 100% by God without any merit or credit given to man.

Jehovah Mekoddishkem (The Lord Who Sanctifies You or makes you holy. Leviticus 20:8;" TARGET="_blank">Leviticus 20:8; Ezekiel 37:28." TARGET="_blank">Ezekiel 37:28.

El Olam (The Everlasting God) Psalm 90:1-3" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 90:1-3 – “From everlasting to everlasting, You are God.”

Elohim (God) Genesis 2:4;" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 2:4; Psalm 59:5" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 59:5 – a combination of YHWH and “Lord” making him the Lord of all Lords. “Creator, Mighty and Strong” (Genesis 17:7;" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 17:7; Jeremiah 31:33)" TARGET="_blank">Jeremiah 31:33) – the plural form of Eloah, which introduces the doctrine of the trinity.

Jehovah Jireh (The Lord Will Provide) Genesis 22:14" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 22:14 – Abraham called God Jehovah Jireh after he provided Abraham with a ram to offer in stead of Isaac his son.

Jehovah Shalom (The Lord Is Peace) "The Lord Our Peace" (Judges 6:24)" TARGET="_blank">Judges 6:24) – Gideon gave the Lord this name.

Jehovah Sabaoth (The Lord of Hosts) Isaiah 1:24;" TARGET="_blank">Isaiah 1:24; Psalm 46:7" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 46:7 – The leader of hosts is the commander of all living creatures.

As in previous parables (cf. The Wedding Garment, Matthew 22)," TARGET="_blank">Matthew 22), the Lord Jesus stresses in this parable the need for keeping watch for His return (see 24:42, 44) as well as His rejection of unreality when He does return. Like the man without the wedding garment, the five foolish virgins represent those who expected to be in the kingdom but had never properly prepared. Although Paul uses the imagery of a chaste virgin in reference to the assembly at Corinth, the Church which is His body is seen as a unit (His Bride), not as friends attending the wedding or wedding supper, therefore the Rapture is not likely in view. Since this is part of an answer to the disciples' question in chapter 24:3 regarding the end of the age and the coming of the Son of Man, it would seem that this parable points to the advent of the Lord Jesus as King of kings, coming to establish His kingdom. During His public ministry, the Lord Jesus was often confronted by those in Israel who felt that, as a result of their natural links with Abraham, they held privileged ground (John 8:33)." TARGET="_blank">John 8:33). His warning to them will have its dire fulfillment at His coming when many "children of the kingdom" will be cast into outer darkness (Matthew 8:12)." Do differences in the manuscripts mean that our Bible is not totally reliable?

The Lord in His wisdom did not preserve to us the original autographs of the Scriptures. Our translations have come from manuscripts formed from documents which may be many copies removed from the originals. These documents have been found in many places and in varying conditions. Finding them, evaluating their authenticity, and assessing their accuracy is a complex science. There are some variations in the manuscripts. W.E. Vine quotes men considered experts in the text saying that the variations are "formed in great part by changes of order and other comparative trivialities." Further, these men tell us "the amount of what can in any sense be called substantial variation . . . can hardly form more than a thousandth part of the entire text." Mr. Vine concludes, as do others, "There is no doctrine in Scripture which would be affected if all the various readings were allowed or if all the disputed words, or those about which there is any doubt, were omitted." (W. E. Vine, "The Divine Inspiration of the Bible, Ritchies’ Christian Book Service, pp. 27, 28.)

Our Lord asserts the exact inspiration of the original words (Matthew 22:29-32;" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 22:29-32; John 10:35)." TARGET="_blank">John 10:35). Their precise truth has been divinely preserved (Psalm 119:89; 117:2;" TARGET="_blank">Psalm 119:89; 117:2; 1 Peter 1:25)." TARGET="_blank">1 Peter 1:25). What warrant have we for insisting on a “gap” or parenthesis in Daniel 9:26," TARGET="_blank">Daniel 9:26, between verses 26 and 27?

There must be a gap, if not between the two verses, at least between V. 27 and the great events in the early part of v. 26, with the consequent scattering of the Jews. This verse seems to work itself out in a long defined period of war and desolation. Then comes v. 27, showing us some one king making a covenant with the many “for a week.” Who is this but the prince of v. 26, whose people destroyed Jerusalem centuries before? And who are “the many” but part of the scattered Jews
restored to their land, and recognised as a nation? This restoration is taking place before our eyes, for the first time for 1850 years; but no “prince” has yet appeared to make the seven years’ covenant, so v. 27 is still future. Neither party will imagine why the covenant will be specially for “one week,” but “the wise will understand.”

He speaks of infants (same word as children) dying before they ever saw light (3:16). Job understood what the Spirit teaches about "the babe" (elsewhere translated child) in Elizabeth's womb (Luke 1:41)." TARGET="_blank">Luke 1:41). A mother carries in her womb a child with its individuality and identity which will continue to exist eternally: a soul.

Who could deny that an individual's personality has a relationship to his parents? The soul is biologically linked to parents at conception.

The answer is no and yes. The five men listed in Acts 13:1" TARGET="_blank">Acts 13:1 not only taught the assembly, but also guided it in sending out Barnabas and Saul. They functioned as overseers. Barnabas and Saul were separated from them for the work to which the Spirit called them (verse 2). The Spirit who gave Barnabas and Saul their work had likewise given these their work of feeding the flock (Acts 20:28)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 20:28). In an established assembly, such as Antioch, the evangelist is distinct from the pastor-teacher (Ephesians 4:11)." TARGET="_blank">Ephesians 4:11). The sphere of responsibility for each is different. Timothy and Titus provide an instructive contrast. Timothy was working in an established assembly, Ephesus. He employed the Word of God so as to correct existing problems, perhaps even including wrongs among those taking the place of overseers. He taught side by side with others, but there is no hint of his being an overseer. Titus worked among fledgling assemblies without recognized elders (Titus 1:4-9)." TARGET="_blank">Titus 1:4-9). He guided these assemblies in recognizing the elders that God had raised up. In that sense, he served like an elder and had direct input into the care of the assembly. This was a temporary responsibility until the assemblies were consolidated from within. Thus a man who sees an assembly work begin is responsible to guide the new assembly until the Spirit clearly identifies the shepherds He has raised up. When these men are able to function on their own, a Titus assumes the same role as a Timothy in Ephesus.

Two primary passages, 1 Corinthians 14:34" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 14:34 and 1 Timothy 2:12," TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 2:12, are likely the reason for this question. The first specifically deals with church gatherings, as the context in the chapter makes clear. The passage in 1 Timothy 2" TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 2 is likewise in the context of public assembly gatherings. At least three considerations indicate this. First, in the next chapter, Paul clarifies that behavior in the house of God (v. 15) is the focus of this letter. Second, if this injunction in chapter 2 includes the home sphere, this seems to contradict Paul’s statement that older women are to teach younger women (Titus 2:3)." TARGET="_blank">Titus 2:3). If we understand 1 Timothy 2" TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 2 to be public gatherings and the Titus passage, in keeping with its context, to be private instruction, the seeming contradiction disappears. Third, in 1 Timothy 2," TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 2, Paul insists that the males pray in every place (v. 8). If the context of this chapter is the home, is Paul excluding women from praying in their closet?

The only remaining concern, then, is a woman’s "usurping authority over the man" (2:11). Strong’s Enhanced Dictionary gives the meaning of this verb as "one who acts on his own authority, autocratic, . . . to govern, exercise dominion over one." In the assembly where God’s design displays the male’s headship and the woman’s submission (1 Cor. 11:3-16)," TARGET="_blank">1 Cor. 11:3-16), a woman does nothing that detracts from that display. The prayer in Acts 4" TARGET="_blank">Acts 4: 24-30 is the assembly’s united prayer. Whoever spoke those words in prayer lead the entire assembly in expressing their desires. Thus, in a special way, praying in the assembly leads the entire gathering in the presence of the Lord. Were a woman to pray, she would be publicly leading and therefore limiting the display of male leadership.

Apart from assembly gatherings, a woman’s prayer more particularly expresses only her own burden. Hannah’s praying exemplifies this (1 Samuel 1:11)." TARGET="_blank">1 Samuel 1:11). A woman praying aloud privately, with her husband or children, or with her friends does not affect the public testimony of male headship. She is not leading a united prayer as one does in an assembly meeting. Her praying in the home appears to be consistent with the Bible’s teaching.
