THE INTERMEDIATE STATE
If we enter at the very moment of death into our Lord’s presence, do we enter bodily?

If so, in what kind of body do we enter?

If this immediate entry were true, would not resurrection be superfluous; and how reconcile it with 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17" TARGET="_blank">1 Thessalonians 4:15-17?
 
Certainly the Scriptures do not teach that at the moment of death the believer enters “bodily” into the presence of Christ, and yet the Apostle Paul says very plainly, “To depart and to be with Christ, which is far better” (Philippians 1:23)." TARGET="_blank">Philippians 1:23). He adds however, “nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you;” so that the presence with Christ is not “in the flesh,” it is not bodily: the body is laid in the grave, it sleeps awaiting the resurrection.

Then again in 1 Corinthians 5:1-5" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 5:1-5 the apostle describes his earnest desire to depart and to be with Christ, which was so great, that he was willing even to enter the disembodied state, so as to be with Christ, evep in that imperfect condition. “We are confident and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

The passage in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17" TARGET="_blank">1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 describes quite another thing, namely, the coming of the Lord; the raising of the sleeping saints (sleeping, that is as to their bodies and whose spirits God will bring with Christ); and the changing of the living saints—two companies which will be caught up together to meet the Lord in the air. This will be the perfected condition.

2 Corinthians 12:2-4" TARGET="_blank">2 Corinthians 12:2-4 is clear proof that the human spirit can exist consciously and intelligently apart from the body, for Paul, when he was caught up, knew perfectly that he was at the third heaven, and in Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for man to utter, and yet he twice assures us that he could not tell whether he was in the body or out of the body. This shows that he believed in the possibility of spiritual existence apart from the body.

PETER’S CONVERSION AND CALL

When was Peter saved? Was it when Andrew brought him to the Lord Jesus, or was it when the Lord called him on the shores of the sea of Galilee to become a fisher of men?

The mission of John the Baptist was, amongst other things, to “make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (Luke 1:15)," TARGET="_blank">Luke 1:15), and, no doubt, Peter, Andrew and the rest of the apostles were all disciples of John, having been baptized by him with the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, waiting for the One that was to come. Accordingly, when these prepared ones came in contact with the Lord, they were ready to receive Him as Messiah. In John i, when Andrew brought Peter to the Lord, He did not call him to repentance or faith, for he did already in a manner believe on Him, but gave Him his new name, anticipating the moment when He would build him as a living stone into His Church. This was only the prelude to the scene on the sea of Galilee.

Thus Peter was called by John to repentance and faith in the one coming after him; then by the Lord to a place in His Church, and later to His service. We apply the word “saved” to everyone who has received Christ as personal Saviour, though the word carries with it more than forgiveness, namely, deliverance to and from. Peter could not receive Christ in above sense till the Lord was revealed to Israel, but no doubt all the true disciples of John, though they did not form part of the Church till Pentecost, were saved persons; they were of the people of God, His own, in a very real sense. In this sense Peter was a saved person before he was introduced to the Lord by Andrew, for he had been already introduced to Him by John the Baptist and had doubtless believed on Him as the One “who should come after him” (Acts 19:4)," TARGET="_blank">Acts 19:4), as indeed did the Old Testament saints in a minor degree. The Lord knew him by name and was now calling him out of the Jewish fold, to belong to His flock.

How were people saved in the Old Testament?

Did people in the Old Testament get saved by performing sacrifices?  Were they saved because they were Jews?  If not, then how could they be saved if they had never heard of Jesus, the cross or the resurrection?  Some people say that God credits salvation to people who are sincere in their understanding of regardless of what they believe as long as they are faithful.  They extend that thinking to the saints of the Old Testament who were saved because they believed what God had revealed up to that time which excluded the knowledge of Christ dying for sins on the cross.  Let's see what the Bible says about people in the Old Testament in their salvation.  

Works vs Grace

Some mistakenly believe that salvation in the Old Testament was based on keeping the law, doing sacrifices and doing good works.  This is refuted multiple times in the Bible. 

"It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins?" (Hebrews 10:4)." TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 10:4).

"By the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight?" (Romans 3:20" TARGET="_blank">Romans 3:20 ).

Those activities, though God-honoring, are not the manner in which a believer was ever, or ever will be saved.

Salvation through Christ

Every sacrifice and prophecy ultimately points to Christ and his work on the cross.  The people who believed in Christ in the Old Testament had less information about the ultimate sacrifice, but had the faith to believe that God eventually would resolve the problem of sin.

Romans 3:25-26" TARGET="_blank">Romans 3:25-26 teaches us that Christ died for sins of all time, including those of the Old Testament.  Christ was foreordained to be the Lamb of God since before the world began.  Revelation 13:8." TARGET="_blank">Revelation 13:8.  Isaiah 53:6" TARGET="_blank">Isaiah 53:6 tells us that "the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all." The salvation that God imputed to Old Testament believers was based on the death of Christ, which in the mind of God was as good as accomplished even before the creation.

Salvation through faith in Christ

The greatest example of salvation through faith was Abraham.  "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness... ...But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness" (Romans 4:3, 5)." TARGET="_blank">Romans 4:3, 5).   Abraham didn't earn salvation, it was accounted to him for his faith.

But what exactly did Abraham believe?  Some would say that Abraham simply believed that God would multiply his seed like the stars of the heaven.  That is the immediate context of Genesis 15:6." TARGET="_blank">Genesis 15:6.  But Christ tells us that Abraham believed something more about the Seed that would be multiplied.  "Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad" (John 8:56" TARGET="_blank">John 8:56 ). Abraham knew that the Messiah was coming and trusted God to work out the matter of salvation at a future time.  Abraham was saved by faith in Christ.

Job knew that "my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth. And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God" (Job 19:25" TARGET="_blank">Job 19:25 -26).  Obviously, Job didn't know how or when, but he trusted God to take care of his redemption.

Moses also trusted in Christ many years before Christ came.  Hebrews says Moses "...esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt ; for he looked to the reward" (Hebrews 11:26" TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 11:26 ).

Although we look back to Christ's life and death, we don't know all the details, only what God has chosen to preserve in His Word.  The Old Testament believers didn't know all the details about the Messiah either, but they trusted Him for their salvation. They looked forward to Christ who was coming.  We look back to Christ who has come.

Was the mountain in the land of Moriah, upon which Isaac was offered, the mountain on which our Lord was crucified?

It is important to notice the exact wording of Scripture. Abraham was told to go “INTO THE LAND OF MORIAR” and offer Isaac there “UPON ONE OF THE MOUNTAINS WHICH I WILL TELL THEE OF,” so that the exact place is unknown. Probably the principal height was Moriah, and the scene of Genesis 22" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 22: one of the lower spurs of the mountain. Mount Moriah or Zion is actually at Jerusalem, and in 2 Chronicles 3:1" TARGET="_blank">2 Chronicles 3:1  we learn that Solomon’s temple was there. Now, it is nowhere said in Scripture that Calvary was a mountain, or even a “green hill,” but is simply called “a place.” But then it must be remembered that the whole of Jerusalem and its suburbs is a mountainous district. We read of “the mountains round about Jerusalem” (Psalm 125:2)," TARGET="_blank">Psalm 125:2), so that though our Lord was crucified outside Jerusalem, and not actually on Moriah, it MAY have been the spot where Isaac was offered. All the verbs of John 8:6" TARGET="_blank">John 8:6 are in the aorist tense, and thus connect Abraham’s joy with a special incident, when “he rejoiced to see the day of Christ.” And he called the name of the place “Jehovah-Jireh” i.e. “in the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.” The word, “mount,” is the Hebrew for “mountain” (har), and includes a mountainous district, properly describing “the place called Calvary.” However, we must not be too dogmatic on the point raised.

Is the Commission of Matthew 28:18-20" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 28:18-20 for the present dispensation, or only for one yet future?

“The Lord Jesus before His death made just one appointment with His disciples, which was, to meet Him on a certain mountain in Galilee after He had risen (Matthew 26:32;" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 26:32; Mark 16:7)." TARGET="_blank">Mark 16:7). Of this fact we are reminded in Matthew 28:16," TARGET="_blank">Matthew 28:16, the opening verse of the paragraph in which the Commission is contained. There had been some more or less informal meetings elsewhere previous to it, but this was the specially prearranged meeting, which naturally would overshadow them all in importance. yet there are those who would ask us to believe that what He told them when He met them there, was not about their Own work at all; but that He gave them minute instructions and comforting assurances with regard to the work of some other unknown individuals, who would live two thousand or more years after their time. They would have us believe that when He said, “Go ye and teach,” lie meant that somebody else was to go and teach; that when He said, “I am with you,” He meant, I will be with some other people who will be on earth two thousand years hence; and that when He added, “Even unto the end of the age,” He meant, until the end of some other age. Those who can swallow this kind of thing must have good digestion, for I frankly confess I prefer to believe that the Lord meant just what He said.

The statement, which some of these brethren make, that Matthew does not acknowledge the Church period, is absurd. Is it not in Matthew that we have the formal introduction of the Church in chapter 16, and of Church order in chapter 18? Is it not there that we find the Lord’s action, so symbolical of turning from Jew to Gentile, in chap. 13. 1; in which after having been definitely rejected by the Jewish leaders in the two previous chapters, it is said, “The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the seaside”? And immediately after, He speaks the Seven Parables of the Mysteries of the Kingdom, which have so often been shown to picture successive stages of this present Church period. That Matthew’s Gospel has a Jewish tinge, no one who is a careful reader can doubt; but this is far off from the Conclusion that there is nothing in it except for Jews. The Gospel of Luke has a Gentile tinge, but would these brethren suggest that there is nothing for Jews in Luke, nothing about the Tribulation, nothing about Millennial times? As a matter of fact, the Commission as given in the end of the Gospels of Luke and of Mark, has a more Jewish Sound about it than the form of it occurring in Matthew.

As illustrating the fact that the Apostles did carry out Matthew 28:18-20" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 28:18-20 there is a word worth noting in Acts 14:21" TARGET="_blank">Acts 14:21: “They had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught (Gr., discipled) many.” It is the very word, “matheteuo,” used in Matthew 28:1," TARGET="_blank">Matthew 28:1, and this is the only place in the New Testament, apart from Matthew’s Gospel, where it occurs. Were they not here carrying out the Commission as given in that verse?”

What is a Gospel Hall?

Gospel Hall the name of the building where Christians meet to “gather to the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Matthew 18:20)." TARGET="_blank">Matthew 18:20).  The churches who meet in Gospel Halls are sometimes referred to as Plymouth Brethren churches.

For simplicity sake, http://www.gospelhall.org/ is much easier to remember than http://www.christiansgatheredtothenameofourlordjesuschrist.org/

Why the name Gospel Hall?

The word “Hall” is a general name for a public building.  Since the Gospel is preached regularly in a Gospel Hall, the name is appropriate for its use.  To distinguish the church (group of people) from the building, the name is distinguished.  Some assemblies choose to name their building a “Gospel Chapel” or use the name of the town or street such as “Smithville Hall”.  Gospel Hall is a common name used in many English speaking North American assemblies.

Are you associated with the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall?

Absolutely Not.  Unlike a Kingdom Hall, the teachings at the Gospel Hall are based on salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, apart from good works or membership in any organization.

What are the beliefs at the Gospel Hall?

God's Word is the foundation on which a healthy church is built. Our mission is based on the commands of the Lord Jesus to worship, preach the gospel, help believers learn more about Him and honor the Lordship of Christ.  Some of his words include

What are the Services held in a Gospel Hall?

Following the pattern of the first churches in Acts, church meetings in the gospel hall will include devotional worship on Sunday, Bible studies, Gospel preaching, pastoral teaching for believers, reports from missionaries and meetings for elders of the church.

1. Every Sunday, the assembly will meet to break bread.  This meeting is either called the “worship meeting”, “breaking of bread” or the “remembrance meeting” based on Jesus’ actions and 1 Corinthians 11:23-26." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 11:23-26.  The focus of this meeting is Christ - his divine character, death, resurrection and Lordship.  Each man will take turns in leading the congregation in prayer, reading a scripture or choosing an appropriate hymn.  After a set period of time (30 to 90 minutes depending on the size of the assembly), someone will specifically thank God for the bread which symbolizes the Lord’s body.  The loaf of bread is handed around the congregation so everyone can take a piece.  Similarly, someone offers a prayer of thanks for Christ’s blood which is symbolized by the cup.  It too is shared and then placed back on the table.  Someone will close with a hymn or prayer or both. This is the Lord’s pattern of worship for the church (Matthew 26:26-38;" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 26:26-38; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 11:23-26).  It allows for the practice called the “Priesthood of all believers” (1 Peter 2:5-9)." TARGET="_blank">1 Peter 2:5-9).  Far from being an entertaining experience, the breaking of bread is an expression of reverence where Christians enter the Heavenly Sanctuary, that is the Holiest of All, to offer praise through the value of the blood of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 13:10-15)." TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 13:10-15).
2. The ministry meeting is a teaching meeting for the “edification, exhortation and comfort” (1 Corinthians 14:3)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 14:3).  One person will take 30 to 60 minutes to read a portion of the Bible and teach the meaning, its context and apply it to daily living.  The teaching meeting typically is scheduled after the Breaking of Bread.  Many assemblies will conduct an annual Bible conference where hundreds of believers will meet in a rented auditorium for a more intensive or in-depth session of teaching.
3. Sunday evening is the customary time for a Gospel Meeting.  At the Gospel Meeting two speakers will preach from the Bible regarding salvation themes – sin, the soul, redemption, the character of God, eternity, faith, assurance etc.  From time to time, the assembly will conduct a series of nightly gospel meetings that may last several weeks.  Sometimes these are conducted in the Gospel Hall.  Often they are in community buildings, tents or schools.
4. An assembly will usually conduct a prayer and bible study meeting one evening mid-week.  The correspondent for the assembly typically will read a few thank-you letters from missionaries and preachers who have received financial support from the assembly.  Several of the men will lead the congregation in prayer for various needs.  The assembly will then conduct a bible study on a portion of scripture or specific subject.  One person will give a short synopsis of the topic and then the remaining time is an open forum to compare ideas on the meaning of the chapter.  This is the forum to learn bible doctrine, ask questions, and consult commentaries or dictionaries. 
5. Sunday school classes are typically offered on Sunday mornings during the same time period as the ministry meeting.  Very often families who are not part of the assembly get their first impression of the assembly meetings through their children.  The goal of a Sunday school is to plant the gospel message into young minds that might not have any other source for their spiritual knowledge.
6. The elders of an assembly meet periodically to pray, discuss the needs of the people in the assembly, schedule “house calls” for infirmed believers, plan the assembly calendar and discuss other matters.

What type of church government exists at the Gospel Hall?

The leadership of the church features servant-leaders called elders.  According to the Bible in 1 Timothy 3" TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 3 and Titus 2," TARGET="_blank">Titus 2, the men who lead a church must be of good moral character, able to teach the bible and care about the people of the church.  These leaders are ultimately responsible for the doctrine taught in the church, the integrity of the use of funds and pastoral care of the church.

The men who serve as elders are recognized in their role by informal consensus of the church by their pattern of living.  Elders usually serve as “unofficial” elders for years before being recognized for their work.  That is, he teaches, encourages, mentors, supports and cares for people long before his elder status is recognized as “official”.

This method of recognition is based on the words in 1 Timothy 3" TARGET="_blank">1 Timothy 3 verses 1 and 6  “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work”.  It is a work, not a position.  “Not a novice…” means he is proven trustworthy to the other people of the assembly.

Is the Gospel Hall part of a denomination?

No.  Each Gospel Hall building is owned and maintained by the local church that meets there.  Although a loose link of friendship exists between many of these churches, there is no central office or membership organization to report statistics, finances or doctrinal creed statements. There is no official list of assemblies.

Each assembly is a unique story of the people who were saved in a community because of sound gospel preaching.  No one history defines the entire group of assemblies worldwide.  So while the Plymouth Brethren of England may be defined as the starting point for the movement, there are others who were similar.  The assemblies represented on this page take their history from men in Scottland.  See the history section of the online book Gathering Unto His Name for more details.

Who are Open Brethren and Exclusive Brethren?

For a history student, the terms “Exclusive” and “Open” refer to groups of assemblies who have formed lines of membership based on doctrinal differences.  The "open" brethren believe that each assembly (church) is an independent entity.  Each group handles its business of teaching, finances and receiving new members as an independent action from other assemblies. 

The "exclusives" believe that since each assembly is part of the body of Christ, in order to maintain unity of the body, a decision rendered by one assembly needs to be recognized by all others in order to maintain the fellowship of the body.  The practical results of their views are chronicled in the various books and articles about the Brethren but you will not find their story here.  Exclusive assemblies often use the name “Gospel Hall” for their building, but these assemblies have very little relationship to the assemblies listed on this site. Is a Gospel Hall part of the “exclusive brethren” or “open brethren”?

Most of the assemblies listed on this site could be called “conservative open brethren”.  Exclusive assemblies often use the name “Gospel Hall” for their building, but these assemblies have very little relationship to the assemblies listed on this site. 

The Gospel Halls are “open” in the sense that any person may join the fellowship who has experienced salvation from his/her sin through faith in Christ Jesus.  It is also required that a Christian's life and beliefs conforms to the general pattern of godly New Testament living.  Believers who are unknown to the elders of an assembly are welcome to the fellowship if they first have a meeting with elders to discuss their standing in regards to salvation, relationships with others and their standing on doctrines of the bible.

The Gospel Halls are "open" in the sense that each assembly is independent.  That is to say, a decision made in one assembly does not need to be ratified or reviewed by other assemblies.

The Gospel Halls are “exclusive” in the sense that a person may not join the fellowship if their beliefs and life reputation are either known to be in error or unknown to the assembly.  A person may attend assembly gatherings as a visitor, but is not invited to speak from the platform, pray publicly, contribute financially or share the bread and wine at the Lord’s Supper. 

The Gospel Halls are “exclusive” in the sense that unity and fellowship between assemblies is maintained by sharing common doctrines.  For example, if one assembly began to promote speaking in tongues or promoted a teaching for a works-based salvation, other assemblies would no longer cooperate with them in evangelism, conducting confereces or by providing financial help when needs arise. 

The majority of "open brethren" assemblies in North America meet in a building named “Gospel Chapel”.  These assemblies share much of the same doctrine as a Gospel Hall, but may have a less direct approach in gospel preaching and some may have an open policy of fellowship with all other churches in their community. Outside of North America and in other languages, there is a variety of names applied to buildings for groups that meet in a similar manner.

What is the special significance of Joseph’s second dream (Genesis 37:9-10)" TARGET="_blank">Genesis 37:9-10)?

Both the dreams of Joseph look forward to the day when the One of whom he is so striking a picture, the Lord Jesus, “the man of sorrows,” “despised and rejected of men,” crucified, but now exalted, will be recognised and owned even by those who once refused him. The first dream, of course, had its literal fulfilment in Egypt, when Joseph’s brethren bowed at his feet. It will also have its further fulfilment “when He comes whose right it is,” and “they shall look on Him whom they pierced,” and shall “mourn because of Him.” Then the affecting scenes between Joseph and his brethren will be re-enacted in deeper measure between Christ and the saved remnant of Israel (Zechariah 12:10-12)," TARGET="_blank">Zechariah 12:10-12), which will form the nucleus of the nation, over which He will reign for ever.

“The Lord God shall give Him the throne of His father David, and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:32, 33)." TARGET="_blank">Luke 1:32, 33). This is the earthly kingdom—the sheaves speak of a harvest—”the field is the world.” The second dream has had no fulfilment yet. Rachel had already passed away. Jacob never bowed to Joseph, but he will to the greater than Joseph. If “the sheaves” point to an earthly sphere, the sun, moon, and stars point to another, the heavenly. This goes further and higher than the first. The earthly kingdom is everlasting, but not unlimited (see Psalm 72:8)." TARGET="_blank">Psalm 72:8). The second will be universal, as well as everlasting. It will include the other, but go beyond it. Of that kingdom, too, Christ will be the Crown, the Centre, and the Sum.
