I was born in a home where my parents were not saved. My Grandfather was a preacher and he prayed for our family – each of us by name. Thankfully, my parents got saved when I was two years old. They took me to gospel meetings and to Sunday school from then on. I learned the gospel well and I knew I needed to be saved.

            In 1952, Mr. Lorne McBain came to town with Mr. Watson from Toronto. Mr. Watson often showed me Scripture. He would ask, “Do you believe this verse? I always answered, “Yes!” Then he would ask, “Are you saved?” I always answered, “No!” He was trying to show me that I did not really believe it or I would have been saved. I was an unbeliever.

            During the meetings I had my 12th birthday. I decided that would be a good night to get saved. I went to meeting with my sister. The next day, I heard my Mom playing the piano. She was rejoicing because my sister had gotten saved on my birthday. I was upset.

            I continued on until my sophomore year of high school. One Sunday, I heard that a senior in our school was killed in a car accident. I immediately thought, “If that had been me, I would have gone to hell.”

            In May of 1956, Mr. McBain came for more gospel meetings. One day Mr. McBain asked me, “Larry, would you like to be saved?” When I replied that I did, he said, “We’ll see you at 9:00am tomorrow.”

This bothered me. I thought, “What if the Lord comes or I die before 9:00am?” Right then I realized I was hoping that talking to a preacher would save me. This was wrong.

The next morning we talked for two hours. Mr. McBain asked, “Do you ever wish Christ had died for your sins?” I answered, “Yes!” After talking some more, Mr. McBain said, “Larry, you’re so dark, we are going to have to go find someone else who can get salvation.” He handed me a tract and left.

            I read tracts all afternoon. I went to the meeting that evening and handed him a note that said. “I do believe that Christ died for me.” But, I still wasn’t saved. This prompted Mr. McBain to come see me that night. He asked if there was any Bible verse that I had been thinking about. I replied, “Well, yes there is. That verse that says, “Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6). We talked some more and then he prayed and left.

            After he left, I thought again of Romans 5:6. I realized then that I was the ungodly one that Christ had died for. Then I thought of Romans 10:9: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Then I thought of John 6:47: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

            That helped. I thought, “Those are the words of Jesus.” I knew that night on May 29, 1956, that Christ had died for my sins, that He was buried and that He rose again the third day. I knew I was saved that day and forever.

I would have to assume that Mr. McBain is very well known since you mention him by name. Can you describe more about him?
