“Do you know where you are?” The doctor’s voice seemed to be down a long, dark tunnel. I didn’t know where I was, what day it was, or where my family was. I could hardly hear, see, feel, talk or think. I struggled just to breath. As I drifted in and out of consciousness, I only knew I was very sick but the Lord was with me.

I was a healthy nineteen-year old who came down with “the flu.” On Sunday, February 8, 1998, I was rushed by ambulance to the Mississauga General Hospital where the doctor told my parents he did not know if I would live. I had a blood infection called septicemia, for which the mortality rate is 80-90%. Toxins (poisons) from an infection in my body were causing my kidneys and lungs to shut down. Doctors and nurses were doing all they could, but my life was not in their hands.

The Lord had saved me when I was six years old. I knew I was a sinner and needed a Savior. The Lord Jesus says “Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37). I simply came to Him and He received me. One of my favorite verses is “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God that you may KNOW that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). I know I have eternal life because Christ died for my sins and He promises to “never leave us nor forsake us” (Hebrews 13:5).

Just before I got sick, I heard a message on Psalm 119:68: “Thou art good and doest good.” I learned that because God IS good, everything he DOES is good. At home I read verse 7: “It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I might learn thy statutes.” I prayed that I might learn about God even if it was by affliction. In less than a week I was dying. However, with complete peace, I knew that if I died I would be in heaven with the Lord Jesus and if I lived I would have His presence with me still.

At one point, I woke-up totally alone, encased in a circular x-ray machine. I was suffocating because my oxygen tube had disconnected. I almost panicked. Then came the sweet comfort: “Underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27). God reminded me that I was in the loving arms of my Savior. What a calm as I repeated the verse over and over!

            Many Christians in many places were praying for me. God, for reasons unknown to me, chose to spare my life so that a week later I came home. Later, my Dad said, “We would still have said God is good if you had died”. It hit me again that God is good and doeth good regardless of the circumstances.

            Many know God’s goodness in salvation. Do you? I had the privilege of proving His goodness as I approached death. We can trust God for salvation and life. I know because I was there. I know, because I know my God.

            If you were to die, would you go to Heaven? What about your sins? Do you have the Lord Jesus as your personal Savior and Friend? Please remember, God says, “Thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1).
