Golden Lampstands of Iowa - Introduction

 Introduction

By Robert Orr

It is a privilege to write a few lines relative to the work of God that has been taken into account in this book concerning this part of the state of Iowa. I have been interested in seeing this put in writing as to the planting of local assemblies as lamp stands of testimony for our blessed Lord. To learn something of the faithful labor in the gospel, the exercise to teach the young converts the truth of God as to believer's baptism and then to convey to these believers the divine pattern as to the local assembly revealed in the word, is to me a source of spiritual stimulation.

Many of the saints of God who were among the first to form a part in a number of these assemblies are now with the Lord. We have been blessed with a spiritual heritage as the truth of God has been carried out in obedience to our risen Lord. Some of us of this generation have had parents and perhaps grandparents associated with assembly testimony. It was the result of spiritual convictions that led the saints to go forth alone unto our blessed Lord and gather simply in His name. The authority of His Word was enough. This caused them to turn away from the traditions of men and unscriptural practices.

I feel that becoming acquainted in some degree with the work that our God has done will be a blessing. It will likely generate a fresh appreciation in our hearts for the labor of the past by our dear brethren and sisters. May it add to our exercise and desire to be found faithful to our Lord in seeking to strengthen the things that remain. In doing this we will be helped in taking heed to the words, "Stand therefore, having your loins girded about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace." (Eph. 6:14,15)

This will be to the praise and honor of our blessed Lord Jesus Christ at the judgment seat of Christ, "If we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast until the end," (Heb. 3:14) until our earthly sojourn is finished.
