Oliver Smith Biography, Iowa Preacher - Oliver Smith's Messages

Appendix 3
The following exerpts were taken from messages Oliver preached.

I don't know of any word in the Bible that exercises me more at times than the word witness. A witness is a person that is often called to the witness stand in court to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. For it is the truth that sets us free.

You don't have to be a preacher for GOD to use you. In the early days there were not any places like preachers have now to go to. From conference to conference and assembly to assembly. If you wanted to preach you had to go out into new fields.

I sometimes think it would be good for us yet if we would be exercised about going out into new fields. When I hear about a conference somewhere that has forty or fifty preachers present, I'm sure glad I'm not there. I'm glad I can go out somewhere in a little lone place and try to tell someone how to get saved.

For let me tell you we are all going to give an account to God at the Judgement Seat of Christ. Not on how we saved or used our money, but on how we used our time and the exercise we had concerning Christ. For he said, " Go ye out into all the world and preach the gospel." He has given us that testimony to be a witness in this world.

One day I was eating with a family and I told them how I got saved. I was just witnessing the thing. That's all I was doing! Just setting down the thing I was telling. The tears came down the hostess' cheek as she told me of her brother in-law that once told her that if he died he would go to hell. I told her that I sure would like to meet this man. And I went.

I came to his house and went inside where he was with his young bride. I read the third chapter of Romans to them. Now you can read the third chapter of Romans. You can read! You can go out and testify to your neighbors. Read to people, thats all I was doing. I was just a young farmer reading to people.

The assemblies were established by men that were of GOD. When some of these men came here from the old country there were no assemblies. They went out into regions beyond, and today we are the fruits of that labor.
Are we just going to care no more and just set back into the circle of our families and forget the poor unsaved, and not be exercised about them? I get exercised just when I talk about them. I am ashamed that I don't do more and try to reach out into the regions beyond. For there is no message on earth that sounds so sweet to me.

Someone said to me, "What would have ever become of us if you never came here with the gospel?" Let me tell you it was ajoy to hear that. What would have ever become of us if no one brought us the gospel? I know what would have become of me if the gospel hadn't been brought to me.

It took old Mr. Herman two years of his life to prove to me he was saved and that he knew it. Mr. Herman was the most honest man that I had ever met in my life. Later he read to me from 1 John 5; "these things have I written unto you that believe on the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye believe on the Son of God." The world doesn't know you can know! We know and we we are witnesses to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, and we have to be truthful.

God wants us to tell the world we know. We absolutely know! How are they going to find out because they don't know? I didn't know! It is the best thing you ever heard that you absolutely can know. I'm saved and I know it, and if you are not saved, you don't know what you are missing! I heard a gospel preacher one time with tears running down his face saying, "You'll miss it if you miss it, you'll miss it if you miss it!"

If we are right, let's stick to what is right and if we are wrong, let's give it up now and go our way. Stick to the truth of God and let's be witnesses to what God has taught us, the things that are most surely believed among us. We absolutely know our sins forgiven and heaven as our home. The world doesn't know and he says to us, "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel."

Young man, no matter where you live, no matter what your occupation, be exercised! God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory.

Manchester 1957

I'll only take about five minutes. What's on my heart are two verses,(for there are certain souls here on my mind) one of them we have heard already; John 3 vs. 16. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life." We sometimes sing - "that grand word whosoever, "and well might we sing it! There is another verse that has whosoever in it that is just as terrible as this is blessed. It is found in Rev. 20 vs. 15. "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." Now as far as I'm concerned, I could wish that that verse wasn't here. I really, really could wish that. When I think of some of you young people here and you're not saved, and it looks as though you may never be.

Think of these two whosoevers for just a minute. God expects you to listen to his Word, not to the preachers, but his word. God isn't interested in you listening to me or anyone else. The only thing God is interested in is for you to listen to the two whosoevers he is trying to tell you of tonight. He so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him - should not perish. But whosoever's name is not written in the Lamb's book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

We are told in Eph. 2 vs 11-12, wherefore remember...ye were without Christ. You've been listening to some men on the platform tonight, telling of a time when they were without Christ, a time when they had Christ, and what took place when they received Christ! He that hath the Son hath life, He that hath not the Son of God hath not life. If you haven't got life, your name is not written in the Lambs book of life!

There is only one thing that will entitle your name to be written there, it's found in John 3 vs 16, whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life ... everlasting life!

Those of us who are saved here tonight won't have everlasting life anymore when we get to heaven then we do right now. We'll enjoy it more there because there won't be any hindrances of us enjoying it like we have in the flesh here. Our names are written there.

There was a time when I used to sing in the choir,"Is my name written there in the page white and fair, in the book of thy kingdom, is my name written there? No one ever called to my attention to answer that question. We want to call your attention tonight in this gospel meeting - is your name written there? Are you one that is heading for the lake of fire? It makes me tremble to think of it, a person in lake that burns with fire and brimstone. The smoke of their torment will ascend up for ever and ever. This is real dear friends, this is not playing!

God provided in the death of his beloved Son, a provision that you might have life eternal, you that are dead in trespasses and sins. The Lord Jesus Christ died and rose from the dead. The wages of sin is death, and because he conquered death he can give you eternal life. No wonder we rejoice to hear him say; "It is finished! It is finished! It is finished!"

Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone in the meeting tonight would be saved. I've been praying that some soul would get saved. I trust it will be like a dear girl at Stout who was saved while I was preaching. I could see it on her face and I knew she had something she couldn't keep to herself till the meeting was over. She had to tell someone nearby! I finally said that there is someone who just got saved in the meeting tonight. I'll go on preaching and you can find out who it is when I'm done. I can see the girl yet after the meeting, jump up and yell, "It was me, mother, it was me!" What a joy it would be if some of you boys and girls could tell your parents, I got saved tonight.

Mind you, this isn't for time, this is for eternity. If it wasn't forever, it wouldn't be quite so serious. If it wasn't forever it wouldn't be so joyful either! The reason we rejoice is because salvation is forever and forever.

You are going to be in one of these whosoevers. Life is uncertain and we are not to boast ourselves of tommorrow, we know not what a day may bring forth. We may see some girl here be reproved, for "He that being often reproved hardenth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." When am I reproved? When I listen to the word of God and find out I need to be saved, something tells me I need to be saved. What is that? It is God reproving you. Is it possible that someone is going to be cut off in their sins and it will be forever too late?

May God help to you trust the Lord Jesus and be saved for eternity!
