Elijah and Elisha - chariott of fire

Teaching Suggestions:

Point 1: God called a new man to take Elijah's place.  Even though Elisha was a busy man, he recognized that God's claims were greater than all others.  As a result, he spent his time with Elijah until the time came that he would be taken up to heaven; Elijah was to leave this world without dying.  The fact that he would leave the world without dying was no small thing!
Point 2: As Elijah and Elisha were going down to Bethel, some of the sons of the prophets of Jericho came and told Elisha that his master would be taken away.  Elijah tried to get Elisha to stay at Gilgal, and then again at Bethel, but Elisha continued to travel with him and would not let him go alone.  Fifty sons of the prophets also followed; all watched as Elijah smote the Jordan River with his mantle, and then Elijah and Elisha crossed over on dry ground.
Point 3: When Elijah gave Elisha permission to ask for whatever he wanted, he requested that a double portion of Elijah's spirit be given to him.  He obviously recognized the uniqueness of God's gift to his master.  Soon after, a chariot and horses of fire appeared taking Elijah up to heaven; his mantle was left behind.  Elisha used the mantle in faith.  The first sign of the double portion he had received was healing the waters.  The sons of prophets, on the other hand, didn't have any faith since they wanted to look for Elijah.
Point 4: In spite of the proofs of his reality - Elisha is mocked by irreverent children telling him to go up to heaven like his master! Two she bears came out of the woods and attacked 42 of them.

Notes: Point 4 shows the importance of respect for God and His things. Never hurts to underline and emphasize that in a day of disrespect.

Summary: Just like Elijah was taken up supernaturally, so the Lord Jesus is coming again to take all believers home. What a day that will be! Are you ready?
