Sunday School Lesson 321 David is Appointed King

Lesson: 321

Lesson Name: David is Appointed King
Theme: God's Power and Greatness

Reading: 1 Samuel 16

Memory Verse: Daniel 4:37
Memory Verse Text: Those that walk in pride He is able to abase.

Talking Points

Point 1: Even though Samuel continued to mourn for Saul, God did not.  God's purposes were not put aside because a great man had fallen; it was time to move on.  When God told him the next thing to do, Samuel, in a moment of weakness, worried that Saul would kill him, but God promised and reassured him that He would show him what to do.  Application: God's servants have many human tendencies and faults.
Point 2: After taking one look at Jesse's eldest son, Eliab, Samuel was convinced that he was God's choice; however, he was completely wrong.  God reminded Samuel that when He chooses a man, He looks upon the heart rather than the physical appearance. Application: God is still interested in the heart of man today.
Point 3: Once Samuel had started what God told him to do, he would not rest until it was done.  Therefore, when all of Jesse's present sons had already been evaluated and none were chosen, Samuel did not quit, he asked if there were more sons and sent for David.  Even though David was outwardly appealing, the Lord saw beyond that to his heart; God saw that David had a heart like unto His own, he had a shepherd's care.
Point 4: When David was presented to King Saul, he did not see him the way the Lord did.  King Saul, however, was mentally comforted when David played the harp, and God put it into his heart to love him greatly in spite of his own sad state.  God had left the disobedient man to fare for himself.
