Sunday School Lesson 920 Why we need to be saved - Because of the Nature of God

LESSON 1 WHY MUST MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN BE SAVED, BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF GOD? God has revealed His will to us, and it is that we be with Him forever.

Visual aids for these lessons are here:

Verse Center: Job 9:2:

I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God? Have students write out this verse on paper to take home with them to study it and memorize it.

Review Center: Make a game . Print off the 13 verses on card stock; cut them into the 13 verses.

Take an egg carton and make slits in the bottom of the 12 cups. Cut 11 pieces of yarn 3 inches long. Cut one 4 inches long. Put the yarn through the holes so that only ¾” sticks out the top. Have students read a card before they choose a yarn piece. When 12 are done figure the winner with the person who has the longest yarn piece.

Visual Aids: Make “poster” of Deut 29:29 “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God; but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” and Ps 98: 2-3 ”The Lord hath made known his salvation; His righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen [that’s us] … all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” so the students can see as well as hear the verses you tell about. Also make a poster of Job 9:2 (above). Make a blue cloud to represent creation of 8 ½ x 11 const. paper with Gen 1:27 on it. Keep on wall for whole 13 week Unit. Make a poster of the 7 words: Creator; Lawgiver; Holy; Judge; Loves us; Rewarder; and Wants all saved. May want a poster of the 7 verses below Gen 1:27- Heb 10:17. Make a poster of the 3 persons of the Trinity and their jobs in relation to our sin as below. This last one should stay on the wall for the Unit.

Aims: That the student can recite the memory verse or for younger students the underlined part.

That the students would be able to tell 5 out of 7 of the reasons why God ‘s nature demands that we be saved.

Vocabulary words to teach if the children have never heard the definitions:

Righteousness; the perfection of Jesus given to us because we accept God’s way of Salvation

Heaven: a place where those who trust Christ for their salvation will go after they die.

Sin: the bad things we do; coming out from our evil nature within us; thoughts, words and deeds against God’s will.

 TEACHING THE LESSON :

Introduction: God reveals Himself to us. Be still and know that I am God. He wants us to know him. A.W. Tozer has stated, “The church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, … as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. … little by little and without her knowledge; … only makes her situation all the more tragic. …What comes to our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. … No people has ever risen above its religion, and … no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God…. Our real idea of God … may require an intelligent and vigorous search before it is finally unearthed and exposed for what it is. It is impossible to keep our moral practices sound and our inward attitudes right while our idea of God is erroneous or inadequate.”

God has made himself known. He has shared with us the secret of who He is. We can’t discover who God is or figure Him out on our own. We are dependent on God to make this known to us. He had Moses write the first 5 books of the Bible in 1500 BC. He had 40 other authors finish writing the rest of the Bible. It was all about Him and how man came to be, how man came to be separated from God through disobedience and how he reconciled us through His Son who came to earth to show us again what God was really like. Deuteronomy, one of the books Moses wrote in 1500 BC says that “The secret things belong unto the Lord our God; but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deut 29:29) There are some things God did not reveal to us because he didn’t feel we needed to know, but he revealed plenty for us to know -how to be reconciled [made at peace with God] to Him. Psalms 98:2-3 written by King David about 1000 BC says, ”The Lord hath made known his salvation; His righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen [that’s us] … all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.” As soon as the first sin was committed by Adam and Eve, God made provision for their soul’s salvation by having them offer a sacrifice for their sin. Abel obeyed God about this but Cain didn’t. (Gen 4:4) It always was the blood that made an atonement for the soul. (Lev 17:11)

 WHY MUST MEN/WOMEN/CHILDREN BE SAVED?

A. Because of the Nature of God (B. in lesson 2)

1. God Created us so he knows what we need. Genesis 1:27:So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. We have been created not evolved. Gen 9:6 Whoso sheddeth man‘s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. This rule should be followed because we are still made in God‘s image. (Evolution is not science-is not observable- and was dreamed up to supplant God’s rights to us- so that men wouldn‘t have to feel guilty about disobeying Him) If death came before Adam’s sin then the wages of sin is not death (Rom 6:23) and Christ’s death would be useless to pay the wages of our sin. Genesis 2:7 says, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” We have a spirit that needs to be filled with God’s Holy Spirit and can be when we accept Christ’s death on the cross for our sins.

2. “The Lord is our Lawgiver” Is. 33:22 God has the right to make the rules because he created us. Gen 2:17 God made one rule for Adam to obey; “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

3. God is Holy and cannot tolerate sin in heaven.

Psalm 99:9 says: Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His holy hill; for the LORD our God is Holy.

4. God is our future Judge. Ps 98:9 “… for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.” Sin is temporarily allowed in God’s creation to allow a higher purpose to be accomplished, but God is restraining and will one day remove all that violates the holiness of creation. God must punish unrighteousness and unjustness since He is Righteous and Just. We know and expect authority people; parents, teachers, police to confront and punish sin when rules are broken. Will not the judge of all the earth do right? John 12:48 says we will be judged by the words he has spoken.

5. God is Love: John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

6. For the Christian, God the Son is our future Rewarder. Hebrews 11:6 says, “… that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” There is the Judgment Seat of Christ, prepared for those who are taken to heaven. Romans 14:10 “… for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” This is not for works to earn our way to heaven, but for the works done because we are saved and want to please our Lord.

7. God wants everyone to be saved. II Peter 3:9 The Lord is … longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Each person of the Trinity has a part in our salvation.

God the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sins; John 16:8 - And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.

God the Son died for our sins: Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

God the Father forgives our sins: Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. … I Jn 1:9
