Sunday School Lesson 218 The Hebrew Servant

Memory Verse Text: The Son of Man came. to minister and to give His life a ransom for many.

Point 1: Exodus 21:1-6 reveals the "Law of the Servant." A master had to treat his servants with respect, compassion, and care if he/she ever wanted the same response of devotion as this servant gave. God never intended that slaves would be treated as poorly as so many masters, who did not fear God, have through the years all around the world.
Point 2: The normal requirements for a servant were discharged when his time of service was complete, and in his "time of reckoning," the Hebrew servant had to consider and acknowledge the kind of master he had served.
Point 3: The devoted Hebrew Servant, willing to continue working for his master for the rest of his lifetime, responded, "I love my master... I will not go out free" (Ex. 21:5). The devoted Hebrew Servant is a picture of the true Hebrew Slave, our Lord Jesus, and of everyone who recognizes all that He has done for them and wants to be just like Him.
Point 4: The Hebrew Servant was marked forever by having his ear bored through with an awl. In reality though, the Hebrew Servant was marked by love long before he ever had the physical mark placed in his ear.

Notes: Isaiah 50:5 may well be a reference to the devoted Hebrew Servant. The Lord was truly the SERVANT who bore this character; He was not rebellious.
