The old man gazed at his employee with deep sadness. This young man, Jeffrey, at twenty-seven years old, had worked for "Mr. Ben" for seven years at his folding box company in Chicago. Though very wealthy, Mr. Ben was always kind to his employees and never let his money give him that air of superiority that so many rich men had shown.

Jeff knew why the sadness was there, and thought he knew exactly why he had been called to the old man's office. Today, August 19, would be his last day on the job. Mr. Ben indeed had every right not only to fire him, but have him fined and imprisoned. You see, Jeff had been caught by the company investigator while loading the brand new imprint machine into the back of his van. It was a $28,000 piece of equipment that could stamp any word or symbol onto boxes of any thickness or type by just pressing a few buttons. It was not a big machine, and Jeff had been caught one evening after all the other workers had gone, trundling out to his van with the machine on a loading cart.

Upon further investigation, it was found that Jeff had previously stolen three templates for making the company's most unique boxes. He had duplicated the plans and sold them to other competitors for a small fortune while Mr. Ben still held the patent rights for those boxes. Now it was the day of reckoning, and since Jeff's activities had been found out, he braced himself for the worst.

Mr. Ben looked sadly at one of his favorite employees. He had treated Jeff kindly over the years, and now to see the young man resort to stealing was a real blow. Jeff looked up in shock as the old man spoke. All charges were being dropped, there would be no fines, and Jeff would still have a job, although in a different department. Should he ever choose to leave the company, he would never find more work, for his theft record would follow him wherever he went.

Jeff looked at the kind face before him and began to weep. He had cost this man so much money, cheated and stolen from him and deserved to be punished for his crimes, yet he was free! Mr. Ben showed him the company's loss of revenue because of the stolen templates; hundreds of thousands of dollars in loss of business to competitors over those boxes! How could this man let him off?!

As he turned and left the room, ashamed and grateful for the mercy Mr. Ben had shown, his last glimpse of that gracious old man was that of a worn and weary face with eyes wet with tears, and then the door was closed. Jeffrey would never forget that day!

Four days later he received a legal document stating he had been forgiven and cleared of charges, signed by Mr. Ben. Six days later Mr. Ben died from a massive heart attack!

This story is a reminder to us of our condition as sinners before a righteous God. The Bible says that "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). Even though like Jeff we have sinned so grievously against God, we too can be forgiven and made right with Him. Though we deserve punishment for our sins, God's own son, the Lord Jesus Christ, took our punishment himself when He died on the cross of Calvary. "Christ died for our sins," and if we trust Him, we can be saved. Trust Him today, and just like Jeff, you'll be spared the judgment your sins deserve.
