j g bellettThe Moral Glories of Our Lord -  A devotion regarding the Moral Glory in the character of the Lord Jesus.  All of his life went up to God as a sacrifice of sweet savour. Every expression of Himself in every measure, however small, and in whatever relationship it was rendered, was incense to his father.  Whatever Adam lacked, the Lord fulfilled completely in his perfect life.  J G Bellett was a brother from the United Kingdeom who wrote his works in the 1800's.

CHAINED AND HELPLESS

At first it sounded like a cow with a cold. As we laughed, talked, and passed the bowls of spaghetti around the table, we did not really notice the strange sound. Then it grew worse. Finally, I jumped up from eating supper and ran to the window in the living room.

When I pushed aside the curtain, I saw our neighbor lady with a knife in her hand. She was yelling at her dog which was making an awful noise. It took a second to sink in. Then I realized, she was trying to free her dog. The silly beast had wrapped it's collar and chain around a tree. Now the dog was trapped. The more he struggled to get free, the tighter the chain got around his neck and the funnier the noise that croaked out of his throat.

I bolted for the garage and looked for something to help her with. I snatched up an ax and raced around the side of the house toward the neighbors back porch. As I got closer, I could see the dog clawing, biting, and squawking to try and escape. The neighbor lady was screaming and bawling at the same time as she kept trying to cut the chain with a paring knife. Whenever she reached for the chain, the dog went wild and the chain tightened. The dog thought she was making the chain tighter and was trying to bite her. Then she tried to cut down the three inch thick tree with her paring knife.

By the time I she was hysterical as was sure her dog was going to die. The dog's squawks had been reduced to squeaks.

"Can I help you, Mrs. Courtney?" I asked.

This sent the woman into another fit of excitement as she yelled. "Please, please! I want my baby free."

The poor pup was totally powerless to free himself from the chain. You are just as helpless. The Bible says you are "without strength" spiritually. What can you do to escape your sins? Nothing! The Lord Jesus said, "Whosoever commith sin is the servant of sin" (John 8:34). You cannot get rid of your sin. The more you try to stop sinning the more you will realize you can't.

When the lady and her dog realized they could not do anything, they let me cut down the tree with the axe. Only when someone else did the saving work, could the dog go free.

Only when you face your sin and your doom to the judgment will you be willing to be saved. The Lord Jesus is the "Christ, the Savior of the world" (John 4:42) because He has completed the work of suffering and sacrifice on the cross. Jesus said, "It is finished" (John 19:30). Will you let Him save you?
