j g bellettThe Moral Glories of Our Lord -  A devotion regarding the Moral Glory in the character of the Lord Jesus.  All of his life went up to God as a sacrifice of sweet savour. Every expression of Himself in every measure, however small, and in whatever relationship it was rendered, was incense to his father.  Whatever Adam lacked, the Lord fulfilled completely in his perfect life.  J G Bellett was a brother from the United Kingdeom who wrote his works in the 1800's.

Gary was used to being away from home. He worked on the "Ocean Ranger". This was one of the world's largest and most modern drilling platforms. These "rigs" were used to drill for oil in the deep, cold waters of the North Atlantic. It was dangerous work especially in the wintertime more than 200 miles away from land. Gary would go out for two to three weeks at a time before returning home.

In February of 1982 Gary said goodbye to his wife and got on the helicopter for the flight to the oil rig. She decided to go to her mother's house for a few days. After checking to make sure the cat had lots of food, she locked the door and drove down the road.

A few days later she decided to check on the cat. What a shock it was when she opened the door and thick strands of black soot hung everywhere! The cat lay dead on the carpet. The strong smell of smoke had gone through the whole house. There had been an electrical fire and everything looked like it was ruined. She was heart-broken. What an awful thing to happen!

She called up the company's office and managed to get through to Gary. At first they decided to wait until his shift was over the next week. But one of the workers said, "There's a supply helicopter coming soon. Why don't you go back on it? It's your last chance before dark." Gary got permission from his boss and decided to go. "I wonder how much is lost because of the fire?", he thought as he flew over the waves, "Why did this happen to us?" He was upset and sad. But little did he realize that he would be the last man to leave the Ocean Ranger alive!

Even before he left, the wind had begun to blow. Spray was shooting upward from the rising waves. By nightfall the winds were screaming across the water. Giant 70 foot waves smashed against the rig until finally a porthole in the control room was shattered. Tons of sea water spilled over the electrical panels. The lights went out. Frantically, the men tried to keep the vessel from sinking but it began to tip in the water. By ten o'clock the Ocean Ranger disappeared beneath the angry waves, taking the lives of all 84 men.

At first Gary didn't believe the news. The enormous rig had sunk and all his friends were dead! Were it not for the fire in his house, he would have died too. What seemed to be such a terrible tragedy was really his biggest blessing!

The Shunemmite woman learned the same thing. God took away her son so that she could learn in a special way the great power of God and His interest in her. The Bible says, "The goodness of God leads to repentance" (Romans 2:4). We may not always understand God's ways with us but we do know that all of His dealings are for our good.
