LOST AND FOUND

"JAMES!" shouted Mrs. Jones. She had last seen James running in the yard. She thought he would still be there. It was getting dark and cold, and James was not there. Mrs. Jones was getting worried!

Earlier in the day, James, his brother, and his sisters had been playing in the yard. They decided to play hide-and-seek. James' brother, Steve, was "it." James thought of the perfect hiding place - the cornfield! Nobody would find him there!

Into the field he ran, making turns into the rows. He got deep enough until he knew nobody would find him. He crouched down and waited. He was so excited! He had found the best hiding place!
Back in the yard, Steve found his sisters, but he could not find James! He looked everywhere! Where could he be? It was getting close to supper time, and Mrs. Jones called out for them to come in. "Where is James?" she asked. Nobody knew! Immediately, the search began. They called and called for James, but there was no answer.

Back in the woods, James was still happy. Nobody had found him! Soon, he wondered why nobody had found him or even called him. Tired of hiding, he decided to come out. Then he realized, he did not know how to get out! He panicked and ran one way and then the other. It all looked the same. He was lost!

James called out to Steve first and then his mother. No answer. Then he turned and ran through the corn until he was exhausted. He was lost! He slumped to the ground and started to cry.

By this time, the neighbors had started to help. It was dark now, and everybody was worried about James. Mrs. Davis, a neighbor, entered the field. Soon she heard a sound. It sounded like somebody crying! Could it be him? She ran toward the sound yelling, "JAMES!"

James was lying where he had fallen. He thought nobody would find him. He cried as he realized he was lost. Soon it would be dark.

Suddenly, he heard a voice. Someone was calling his name. He jumped up and yelled, "IT's ME, JAMES!" Tearing through the corn he ran toward Mrs. Davis. She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tight. James was found! She carried him out to his mother who was so glad to have James back!

That's just what happens to somebody who gets saved. We run our own way, like James did into the cornfield. We think we know what we are doing, but we don't! We are lost, just like James. There is nothing we can do to be saved either! Somebody has to come where we are and save us.

Just as Mrs. Davis was looking for James, the Bible says the Lord Jesus has come "to seek and to save that which is lost" (Luke 19:10). He came to earth and died on the cross to save us from being lost forever in Hell. The Lord Jesus promised, "whosoever believeth in Him, should not perish, but hath everlasting life" (John 3:16).
