MY BEST FRIEND

When I was a boy, I somehow got an infection in my leg. It swelled and pained until I could hardly walk. After trying different medications, the doctor finally put me in the hospital.

I went in on a Sunday. I remember our family doctor and the surgeon standing beside my bed. They told my parents about the problem and said that surgery was the only solution. They scheduled me for surgery early the next morning.

I was scared. After the doctors left, Dad and Mom talked to me for a long time. Before they left, Dad prayed and told me he would be back in the morning before I went to the operating room.

Early that Monday morning, my Dad walked into the room. He prayed with me again. I was more afraid than I had ever been in my life. The nurses came with a stretcher and wheeled me down the hall. Dad walked beside me holding my hand.

Soon we came to the operating room. I remember the moment well. My Dad leaned down and kissed me and whispered, "Son, I'll be waiting right here for you all the time."

They swung open the door and rolled me in - all alone. I couldn't see my Dad. However, knowing he was outside the door gave me confidence and peace. When I awoke, he was there just as he promised.

Since then, there have been other times I have been afraid. Sometimes I am afraid of the future. Other times, I don't even know what I am afraid of. Dad isn't here anymore to hold my hand. He can't whisper words of comfort in my ear.

But then, how could I forget? I have a far greater Friend than my father. He is a "..Friend that sticketh closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24). He has done something for me no other friend could do. He died for me! He is "the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me." He paid for my sins on the cross.

This morning, He talked to me. No, I didn't see Him or hear His voice in the sky. I read His letter to me - the Bible. It is a personal letter to me telling me that He loves me and that I have everlasting life. It's as if He leans over and promises, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5).

I can see why Isaiah said centuries ago, "I will trust, and not be afraid" (Isaiah 12:2).

Do you have a friend that you KNOW has paid for your sins? Has He promised you are safe (saved) and that you will be in Heaven? For sure? Remember, the Lord Jesus said, "Him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37).
