Themes Substitute PUNISHED FOR ME! Ricky, Gregg, and Jimmy were best friends. They had been in the same school since first grade. Now they were in their last year of elementary school. This September was a little different for Ricky. During the summer Gad had spoken to him through the Bible. Ricky had realized he was a sinner, and was in danger of going to Hell in his sins. It was then that he understood from the Bible that the Lord Jesus Christ had suffered on the cross for his sins. Ricky had been saved. He was very happy to tell people what had happened. Gregg and Jimmy were first to hear what God had done for Ricky. They were not very interested and Ricky was sad. He wanted them to understand what he understood. He wanted them to be saved too. In the past, the three boys were known for causing trouble. Gregg and Jimmy had some new ideas. If you roll a small piece of paper into a tube shape and jam it into a water fountain with a pencil, the fountain will spray the next person like a garden hose. One by one students tried to get a drink and were soaked. Soon the principal heard what was happening.. He made it clear that he was going to find out who did it and punish them. Finally, he came to Ricky's class. Ricky, Gregg and Jimmy were all there. The principal told them the whole sixth grade would receive a detention unless someone confessed. Slowly Ricky raised his hand. Gregg and Jimmy could hardly believe it. Ricky was going to take the punishment for what they had done. They went to see Ricky after he came home from detention, and asked him why he had done it? Ricky told them he knew no other way to explain to them what God had shown him during the summer. He thought this would give him a good opportunity. With his Bible, Ricky showed Gregg and Jimmy how the Lord Jesus had taken his place. He read them these words "The Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). He explained how that when the Lord Jesus suffered on the cross, He was taking the punishment for Ricky's sins. You too, like Ricky, can come into the good of what the Lord Jesus has done. The Bible says "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Take your place today as a sinner before God; lost and sure of punishment. Come to the word of God and find "...Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37).
