What is the full name of Jesus? Is it Lord Jesus Christ or just Jesus?

Is the name Jesus enough to refer to Christ or does he have a fuller title like "Lord Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Father of Eternity"? These, and many more titles, are not sufficient to capture the fullness of him who is "the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation." Colossians 1:15." TARGET="_blank">Colossians 1:15.

Last names, or surnames, were not used in Jesus' time. It wasn't common in Europe for people to use them until the middle ages.

Surnames were initially based on who the father was (Mike Thomson), the occupation that one had (Mike Miller), or what town a person lived in (Mike Berlin).

Jesus might have been named Jesus bar Joseph, Jesus Carpenter, Jesus Nazareth if they used surnames. Yeshua bar Yosef (Aramaic name form) of Nazareth (Jesus son of Joseph of Nazareth).

A common way to refer to Christ is to use the three, short, but descriptive titles "Lord Jesus Christ" or "Jesus Christ". There is no one single formula used in the Bible. The appropriate name is used in all situations to emphasize something about Him. Sometimes, the name Jesus is used to emphasize his humble birth and earthly life (Acts 9:27;" TARGET="_blank">Acts 9:27; Acts 19:15;" TARGET="_blank">Acts 19:15; Acts 21:13;" TARGET="_blank">Acts 21:13; Acts 26:9)." TARGET="_blank">Acts 26:9).

Jesus is his earthly name, used to emphasize that he is the Savior (Matthew 1:21)." TARGET="_blank">Matthew 1:21). The Bible refers to him as simply Jesus in many of the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Certainly they show no respect to him for using his earthly name. He is referred to more fully in the epistles as Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23" TARGET="_blank">Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The name of Christ is "one who is anointed" by God which has the idea of being chosen or the Promised One. John 4:25-29" TARGET="_blank">John 4:25-29

There are some Biblical principles about lending money to friends, family, fellow-believers and business accociates. First, a general principle about debt is "The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower becomes the lender's slave"(Proverbs 22:7)." TARGET="_blank">Proverbs 22:7). In a family, people should be treated as brothers rather than masters. Perhaps you could avoid straining a relationship with a family member by getting money from a bank instead of a family member.

Loaning Money to Unbelievers

In the Old Testament, the law prohibited the Jews from charging money to each other. "You shall not charge interest to your countrymen: interest on money, food, or anything that may be loaned at interest" (Deuteronomy 23:19)." TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 23:19). You may charge interest to a foreigner, but to your countryman you shall not charge interest, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land which you are about to enter to possess" (Deuteronomy 23:20)." TARGET="_blank">Deuteronomy 23:20).

Collecting Bad Loans

Christians should be willing to release money if the loan goes bad. Ask your questions BEFORE loaning money. What is the loan for? How will it be paid back? Is there a guarantee collateral? Once the money is out of your hands, you no longer have control of it. With a Christian relationship on the line, the Bible says "Does any one of you, when he has a case against his neighbor, dare to go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints?" (1 Corinthians 6:1)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 6:1). We are told that it is better to be defrauded than to lose our witness by suing one another (1 Corinthians 6:7)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 6:7).

Christian Attitudes toward People

The Christian standard of exacting money shows our attitudes toward relationships. People are more important than possessions and relationships with others should be preserved even at the loss of personal belongings.

Luke 6:34" TARGET="_blank">Luke 6:34: "If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, in order to receive back the same amount."

Luke 6:30-31," TARGET="_blank">Luke 6:30-31, "Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. And just as you want people to treat you, treat them in the same way."

A gift as an alternative to a loan

If your friend or family member is asking for a loan and has a legitimate need, that means he needs help. A loan is a nice way of giving people short-term help in a real way. However, if you have a healthy relationship that you don't wish to put into jeopardy, consider giving him a gift instead. Philippians 2:3" TARGET="_blank">Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Did Lazarus die again after being resurrected by Jesus?

Does Hebrews 9:27" TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 9:27 ("once to die") mean that those the Lord raised, like Lazarus, did not die again but went to heaven at Christ's ascension?

At the Fall, God appointed death as the one-time penalty for sin (Romans 5:12;" TARGET="_blank">Romans 5:12; 1 Corinthians 15:21, 22)." TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 15:21, 22). That compares to the one-time offering of Christ for sins (verse 28).

This verse states that in the natural course of events, death is a one-time occurrence. At the Rapture, supernatural power will alter this. Living saints will never die (John 11:26)." TARGET="_blank">John 11:26). In the case of those raised from the dead before the Lord's incarnation, during his ministry, and in the apostles' ministry, supernatural power contravened this order. Only a divine intervention can reverse death.

Scripture gives no reason to believe that any raised from death before Christ's incarnation or after His ascension had a miraculous exit from earth. They returned to life in a world ruined by sin; along with Lazarus, they died again.

The Lord is the only One thus far raised "out from death" ("out resurrection," Philippians 3:11)." TARGET="_blank">Philippians 3:11). He is alive forevermore (Revelation 1:18)" TARGET="_blank">Revelation 1:18) and is the Firstfruit (1 Corinthians 15:23)" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 15:23) of a new and distinct harvest. Others before Him were raised from the dead. He was raised out from death - a resurrection. At His coming, the sleeping saints will not merely be raised from the dead, they will be resurrected never to die again, having changed bodies like the Lord's body of glory (1 Corinthians 15:51-56;" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 15:51-56; Philippians 3:21)." TARGET="_blank">Philippians 3:21).

What is a good commentary for Genesis and Daniel?

Which commentaries are the best helps to study these books?

The series, "What the Bible Teaches," is a valuable first resource for each book it covers. At present, it covers Genesis, but not Daniel. Most general commentaries recommended in Truth and Tidings January, 2001; February, 2001) have some help on these books.

For Genesis, commentaries on the Pentateuch recommended by J. McColl (April, 2001) will provide help. W H. Griffith Thomas on Genesis is highly recommended by both Wilbur M. Smith and Cyril J. Barber, whose evaluations of Bible study books are widely respected. Barber writes that Thomas book is "possibly the most helpful devotional exposition of Genesis available." Henry M. Morriss book, "The Genesis Record," is valuable, especially for scientific data.

On Daniel, Wilbur Smith (who had about thirty commentaries on Daniel, a favorite book of his) said that, if he could have only one book on Daniel, it would be Arno C. Gaebeleins, "The Prophet Daniel." Interestingly, Harold Paisley (before he wrote his good book on Daniel) considered Gaebelein to be the best on Daniel. Wilbur Smith wrote of Charles Boutfiowers book, "In and Around the Book of Daniel," that "in historical matters, it is the finest work of its kind in our language.

For studying the Bible by these principles, the following books give assistance with word meanings: Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words; Unger's Bible Dictionary (more like an encyclopedia); Strong's Exhaustive Concordance or Young's Analytical Concordance (preferably both). What does Nebuchadnezzar's dream mean in Daniel 2?

What is the meaning of the image in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (Daniel 2:31-45)" TARGET="_blank">Daniel 2:31-45)?

King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem and therefore considered that his gods had overcome the God of Israel, Jehovah (Daniel 1:2)." TARGET="_blank">Daniel 1:2). God gave him a dream of future events (2:28). Demonstrating that He could reveal the unknown, God revealed to Daniel both the dream, that only the king knew, and also its interpretation. Thus the Lord affirmed to Nebuchadnezzar that He knew and controlled the future and that He had given the king his kingdom (verse 37). This dream also helped God’s people because it informed them of the course, extent, and conclusion of the troublesome "times of the Gentiles," the period when Jerusalem is under Gentile control (Luke 21:24)." TARGET="_blank">Luke 21:24).

The dream centered around an image composed of four metals: a head of gold, arms of silver, torso of brass, and legs of iron (verses 3 1-33). Daniel interpreted these as four kingdoms, beginning with the Babylonian empire (verses 37-40). In keeping with the revelations in Daniel 7, 8,9," TARGET="_blank">Daniel 7, 8,9, and 11, the other three kingdoms are Medo-Persian, Grecian, and Roman. Viewed from head to feet, the image had metals of decreasing value, a reflection of the increasingly less autocratic structure of the successive kingdoms. The "iron kingdom" is a divided kingdom (verse 41) because at the image’s feet the iron was mixed with clay, an unstable combination. Since the kingdoms are sequential, this suggests that the Roman kingdom is viewed in one form, iron, and a later form, iron and clay. Between these two forms is most of the present Church age.

Daniel draws attention to the toes of the image and their instability (verses 42, 43). When he then refers to "these kings" (verse 44), Daniel seems to be interpreting the toes as kings, 10 in number. In the days of this 10-king confederacy of the revived Roman Empire, a stone "cut out without hands" struck and destroyed the image in the king’s dream and became a great mountain (verses 34, 35). Thus, as Daniel’s subsequent visions reveal, the revived Roman kingdom, over which "the Beast" will reign (Revelation 13:1, 2; 17:11-14)," TARGET="_blank">Revelation 13:1, 2; 17:11-14), will end when our Lord, the Stone rejected, yet exalted (Matthew 21:42, 44)," TARGET="_blank">Matthew 21:42, 44), will destroy Gentile power and establish His everlasting kingdom.

How are the books of the Bible interrelated?

Are the Bible’s books interrelated?

Dates, themes, and settings of A books help in relating them. Two examples might suffice.

Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther close Israel’s Old Testament history, following the exile, and foreshadow events yet future. Ezra and Nehemiah tell of the spiritual and national recovery of a faithful remnant in the land, although both recoveries are somewhat limited. But what about other Jews who will remain scattered among the Gentiles? As in Esther, God will sovereignly preserve those who respond to His Word; they’ll also come into joy and blessing.

Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians emphasize teaching regarding the Church, the Body. Ephesians focuses on our relationship with one another; we are one in Christ. Colossians focuses on our relationship with Christ; we are complete in Him. Philippians shows how right relationships with one another are maintained by a devoted appreciation of our relationship with Christ.

Who has the authority to "put away" someone from a church?

Does Matthew 18:20" TARGET="_blank">Matthew 18:20 teach that overseers put a person away from the assembly?

The parable of the straying sheep (verses 12-14) is an important part of the context of Matthew 18:20." TARGET="_blank">Matthew 18:20. The differences between this parable and the story of the lost sheep (Luke 15:4-7)" TARGET="_blank">Luke 15:4-7) are important. There the sheep is "lost"; here it has "gone astray." Here, the 99 are not in the wilderness, and the effort may prove to be a failure, as it was in the hypothetical case (verse 17). This is descriptive of the work of godly shepherds to recover a straying believer. Seeing recovery is shepherd work, there is good reason to consider the "two or three" of verses 16, 19 and 20 to be assembly elders or shepherds.

Elders act for an assembly in discipline cases, but their judgment is not arbitrary; it is in obedience to Heaven’s judgment. "Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be (having been) bound in Heaven." The action of an assembly carries out God’s judgment. However, it is not merely elders who "put away"; it is an assembly action (1 Corinthians 5:13)" TARGET="_blank">1 Corinthians 5:13) with elders acting for it. Very often there are details of sin that should be only known and handled by elders. They have the confidence of the assembly and act tenderly as shepherds in behalf of the assembly.

Our Lord’s words about the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit arose from the ascription by the Jewish leaders of His works to “Beelzebub,” implying that “He had an unclean spirit.” Whether they KNEW intelligently He was actually working by the Holy Spirit is not said, but they were no doubt speaking deliberately against the Lord, and that was a very heinous sin, leading on to His cruel death at Calvary. Could a more dreadful sin be imagined? Yes, there was one greater. That could be forgiven, and many of His murderers were indeed forgiven on repentance (Acts 2:38)," TARGET="_blank">Acts 2:38), through the testimony of the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. What, then, is this more grievous sin, for which there is no forgiveness? It is the deliberate rejection of the testimony of the Holy Spirit; it is the sin of apostacy. When this sin has been reached, “It is impossible to renew again to repentance” (Hebrews 6:6)." TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 6:6). It is not that those guilty want to repent and are refused, but it is impossible to get them to want to repent. They become adversaries (see Hebrews 10:27)." TARGET="_blank">Hebrews 10:27).
