Themes: Strength of Christ K.E.B. The innkeeper noticed the thin young man as soon as he walked through the door. He ordered a cup of coffee and said that was all he could afford. He then sat on a chair next to the fireplace and nodded off to sleep. The innkeeper had warned him to move on, but he had paid no attention. He had told him that this was a mining town and at night all the miners came here looking for supper and trouble. Still, the young man refused to leave. Suddenly, the chair which the young man was sleeping on jerked out from under him and he went sprawling to the floor. He looked up and saw a huge miner standing over him. "Sleep somewhere else!" the miner said. "I need this chair." "You don't have very nice manners," the young man said, bouncing to his feet. The miner laughed. "Maybe not. But I don't see anyone here big enough to teach me. Do you? " "I think I'm big enough" the young man challenged. The miner laughed again. "Go home. Your mama's calling you," he scoffed. He then put his hand on the young man's chest and pushed it as hard as he could. The young man went flying backwards until he hit the wall and fell to the floor. The miner picked up the chair and went back to the table. All of his friends were laughing at the poor man who met up with the giant. But before the miner could sit down, he felt someone tap him on the shoulder. When he turned to see who it was, the young man wound up like a baseball pitcher and hit him in the mouth. The giant crashed to the floor. Now the miner was mad. He quickly got up and went after the young man, throwing punch after punch and hitting only air. The young man was ducking his head this way and that. Then he would step in, land a punch, and back away from him. Finally, he landed a blow which knocked the miner to the floor with a thud. He was out cold. All the people cheered. The young man was unbelievable. They began to call him the giant killer. Some even told him he should be a boxer. Actually this story is about Jack Dempsey who years later in 1919 won the world heavyweight boxing title. He relied on his strength and skill to defeat his opponents. David, in our story, was also a giant killer. But he relied on God to defeat Goliath. It was God who guided the stone which killed the giant. But let me tell you about another battle fought at another time. The whole world and Satan were on one side. The Lord Jesus was alone on the other side. They came with all their weapons. But He had none. Yet through His death, He defeated every enemy and put away sin (Hebrews 9:26). Through His death, He defeated Satan (Hebrews 2:14).
