Themes God Listens THUMP-THUMP! KNOCK-KNOCK! "Please!" shouted Ellen over the thump-thump of the music coming from her neighbor's apartment. "Will you turn your music down?" Ellen had already listened to the thumping for two hours. It was after midnight, and she was very angry that her neighbor's party was still going. "Aw," said the woman at the door, "that'll spoil all the fun! But, I guess I can turn it down." With that she slammed the door in Ellen's face. Ellen went back inside her apartment and crawled into bed. The thump-thump of the bass got louder. Dragging herself out of bed again, Ellen left her apartment and raced down the flight of stairs to Mr. Lewis' door. Mr. Lewis was a kind man, but he knew how to be firm. Ellen rapped lightly on the door. Mr. Lewis appeared at the door, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. His hair was a mess. Mr. Lewis! I'm sorry to disturb you, but -," Ellen began. Mr. Lewis cocked his head, motioning Ellen to stop speaking. "It's the music, eh? I can hear it all the way down here," he muttered. Knock-knock-knock-knock-knock. When the door finally opened, Mr. Lewis spoke firmly. "Your music is very loud tonight. you've been asked once to turn it down, and I am asking you again. Will you PLEASE turn it d-?" The door slammed shut in front of him. From behind the slammed door the woman screamed, "ALL RIGHT! I'll TURN IT DOWN!!" Instead, she turned it even louder. By this time, Jake and Mary, who lived across the hall, had joined Ellen and Mr. Lewis. "Come here," Jake motioned everyone into his apartment. Mr. Lewis picked up his telephone and dialed. Seven minutes later two policemen drove in with lights flashing. Knock-knock-knock-knock-knock. No answer. Knock-knock-knock-knock-knock. The door flew open and again and Ellen's neighbor stood in the doorway. "There seems to be a party going on here," the officers said. "We've had complaints about the noise level from your neighbors. Will you please keep the music down?" "Oh, fine! I'll turn it down!" she frowned. SLAM went the door! "It will only get louder!" Ellen and Mr. Lewis and Jake and Mary all mumbled in unison. Ellen, Mr. Lewis, Jake and Mary, and the police asked the woman three times to turn her music down. She acted as if she had never heard them. She did not care what they said. What if God was that way? Imagine if you cried out to God for salvation and he did not hear? Thank God the Bible says, "Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear" (Isaiah 59:1). God WILL hear your cry for salvation now. God wants you to be saved through the Lord Jesus today. God WILL NOT answer your cries for salvation after the Lord Jesus comes back or after your life is over. "The Lord says, Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer" (Proverbs 1:27).
