j g bellettThe Moral Glories of Our Lord -  A devotion regarding the Moral Glory in the character of the Lord Jesus.  All of his life went up to God as a sacrifice of sweet savour. Every expression of Himself in every measure, however small, and in whatever relationship it was rendered, was incense to his father.  Whatever Adam lacked, the Lord fulfilled completely in his perfect life.  J G Bellett was a brother from the United Kingdeom who wrote his works in the 1800's.

Themes: Sin's Deception

When God sent fire and brimstone down on Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot lost everything he had lived for. He also lost part of his family. He would have to look back on a wasted life. How sad!

I want to tell you a true story about a man who had two names. The first name was the one with which he was born. He family called him Stephen.

Stephen was a very bright boy. In 1952 he was graduated from Harvard. While there he had belonged to seven secret communist or socialist groups. After graduation, he was drafted into the military. He lied when he was inducted, saying that he had never belonged to any Communist organizations.

He was sent to Europe as a soldier in the US Army. But then one day a letter came from the army telling him that they had found out about his past and that he had to appear in court. Afraid, he decided to run away, to desert.

When God faces men and women with truth, many run and hide. It is far better to face the truth about your sin and allow God to show you how it can be forgiven.

He took a train to Austria and then swam across the Danube River into Communist territory. He thought that he would be welcomed as a hero, but the Russians were suspicious. At first he was put into prison. Later he was released with a new name and birthday. His new name was Victor. He was given a job as a teacher in East Germany.

But in 1988, the Communist party in East Germany began to fall apart. Victor wrote letters to every Communist official he could. His letters were all the same: he encouraged them to continue to defend communism. He called on them to hold the line and not give in to demands for democracy.

But finally the end came. The Berlin wall was destroyed and East Germany became reunited with Germany. Communism was no longer the political ideology of the land. Victor was a loser.

As he wrote home to relatives and spoke to reporters, Victor had the same message for each: He had wasted his life. Everything he had fought for and sacrificed for had been lost. "I am so depressed, such as I never was in my life!"

Here was a man who gave everything for an idea - and lost it all. Many are sacrificing everything for fun or fame, pleasure or pride. They will miss God's salvation and lose everything including their souls. "What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?"
