Themes Fooling God "WHO WAS THAT WOMAN?" Jesse opened the closet door. "Yes!" he said as he rummaged through the clothing. "This will work!" The closet was filled with women's clothing. Jesse took off his shirt and trousers and stuffed them into an old leather satchel. "I'll need these later." As he tried on the clothes, his mind raced along. "The sleeves are too short on this blouse. No matter. This sweater will hide that. Now, I need the longest skirt in here. Great. Here we go. Oh no! The waistband won't button. No problem. I'll use my belt. What will I do with my hair? I need a big hat. How about this funny thing. It will do. Where's the mirror?" Jesse found a big mirror. He pulled the hat down over his forehead and turned up the coat collar. "Perfect!" he smiled, "Only one more thing." He backed away from the mirror. If he was going to dress like a lady, then he must walk like a lady. He strutted back and forth in front of the mirror. His cowboy boots were clunky, so he had to step quietly as he practiced. He began to sweat. His life depended on this costume. Then he remembered one more thing. "I have to talk like a lady." Hurriedly he practiced a few sentences in a high pitched voice. Jesse James was a murderer and a robber. He was running from the law. If he was arrested, he would be put to death for his crimes. If he traveled in disguise he might not get caught. It was night when Jesse picked up his satchel and left the room. He walked quietly, trying to be as graceful as a cowboy in boots could be. He walked until he could go no farther. He saw a candle in the window of one of the houses. The porch. It creaked under his weight. KNOCK! Knock! Knock! (Jesse quickly remembered that ladies do not knock very hard.) Mrs. Plummer opened her door to a very rough looking woman. "May I please spend the night, Mame?" Jesse whispered in high screech. Mrs. Plummer invited this strange lady into her home. Jesse passed the test. Much later, Mrs. Plummer discovered that her funny visitor was really Jesse James, the most wanted bandit and murderer. Jesse tricked her with his disguise. He stayed the night and left early in the morning, unseen and uncaught. Jacob fooled Isaac. Jesse fooled Mrs. Plummer. BUT - No one can fool God. You will not get away with sin or trick God into thinking you are saved when you are not. Don't even try! The only way you can truly be saved from the punishment for your sin is through the Lord Jesus. He suffered and died on the cross for sinners. Just as God promised, "Thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21).
