Sunday School Lesson 223 Hobab makes a choice Print E-mail

Lesson: 223 Lesson Name: Hobab Makes a Choice
Theme: Opportunity: A Turning Point / Choices

Reading: Numbers 10:28-36

Memory Verse: Hebrews 3:15
Memory Verse Text: Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.

Point 1: God had been revealing His goodness, greatness, purposes, and power amongst His people, and as a result, Hobab (Moses' father-in-law) had seen and heard a lot about it.
Point 2: Moses told Hobab all about God's purpose behind the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.  He also described to him the Promised Land and what Hobab would enjoy if he came along with God's Chosen People.  Hobab's opportunity for great blessing was not a dream; God had spoken it.
Point 3: Hobab refused and excused himself on the grounds of his kindred.  Moses pleaded again and explained how Hobab could be useful, but he was still unmoved.  Hobab said, "I will not go" (Num. 10:30).  Sad to say, there are others like him today.
Point 4: Notice: God went before His people and cloud and fire accompanied them; of all people, none were more unique than those the Lord had chosen.  (And Hobab stilll did not want to accompany them.)

Notes: It might be helpful to compare Hobab to Ruth: Ruth was asked to leave, but she made her choice for God and His people saying, "I will go" (Ruth 1:16).
