Sunday School Lesson 229 Moses and Aaron die and are buried by God Print E-mail

Lesson: 229 Lesson Name: Two Strange Funerals
Theme: Sin's Foolishness and Carelessness

Reading: Numbers 20:12, 22-29; 27:12-17

Memory Verse: I Sam.15:22
Memory Verse Text: To obey is better than sacrifice.

Attention Getter:

Point 1: Aaron and Moses were told that they would not be able to bring God's People into the Promised Land.  They were also told the reason why; the people did not believe God!  The sin of unbelief affects all of us.  Does the sin of unbelief seem big to you?  It was and is very serious to God.
Point 2: Aaron was taken to the top of Mount Hor where God graciously gave him a chance to look at all of the Promised Land before he died.  (Mount Hor is the highest peak near the border of the Promised Land.)  The priesthood was transferred to his son, Eleazar, according what God desired.  Aaron's death marked the end of the wanderings; the people still "marched and halted," but they no longer wandered.
Point 3: Moses blessed the tribes of Israel, which overall, was a statement of what his whole ministry for them had been.  He also set before the people the new leader, Joshua.  Finally, at God's instruction, Moses also went to see the Land that God had promised His People.
Point 4: Moses went right to the entrance of the land near Jericho.  There, he was reminded of the reason why he could not enter.  (Today, we all still need wisdom to foresee what might have been!)  The Lord showed Moses all of the Promised Land and then buried him there.  No one knows where Moses' sepulcher is but God. Psalm 116:15 says, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

Notes: In addition to the specified passages, make sure you are also familiar with Numbers 33:38-39 and Deuteronomy 32:48-34:12.
