Talking Points:

Point 1: David thought of Saul's descendants in kindness and questioned, "Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul...?" (2 Sam. 9:1).  In response, he was told that Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson, who had been lame on both feet since age five, was still alive.  Application: God's kindness always has great purposes.
Point 2: As soon as David heard that Mephibosheth was still alive and living in a poor area some distance away, he sent for him.  Mephibosheth was probably afraid and anxious about the possibility that David would seek him out and destroy any competition for the throne.  However, his fear was likely justified when he remembered what his grandfather had done to David.
Point 3: Due to his lameness, Mephibosheth was brought near to David by someone else.  Falling at his feet, Mephiposheth heard David speak his name in kindness and had everything that was his father's and grandfather's restored to him.  David also gave him servants to maintain it all.  Finally, David graciously welcomed him to his own table and home.  Feeling unworthy of such grace, Mephibosheth compared his low estate to that of "a dead dog!" (2 Sam. 9:8).
Point 4: Mephibosheth had been given the place of a son of David!  There, he seemed content to abide by the one who had blessed him so richly, and had not treated him as he deserved due to his association with David's enemy.
